Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Porta Panagia for its stunning 13th-century Byzantine architecture and remarkably preserved mosaic icons. The serene setting and the opportunity to interact with the friendly caretaker enhance the experience. While entry has a small fee, many find it well worth the visit for its historical and artistic value.

"The Byzantine church of Porta-Panagia is a beautiful and very well preserved ancient church from the 13th-century.
It is located a few hundred meters west of Pyli, and in order to arrive there, you have to cross the bridge over Portaikos river .
The church was built in 1283 by Ioannis Angelos Komninos Doukas and you can find there a pair of impressive mosaic icons.

If you arrive  there and you find out that the gate of the church is locked, you should search for the priest of the church (around) who is a very kind and polite person, and he will open it for you!
Except of that, don't miss three other beautiful attractions nearby: the hanging gate bridge of Pyli (200 m east), the stone bridge Pyli Trikala (500 m west) and the fantastic arch bridge waterfall of Paleokaria (7 km west)."

"Beautiful church from 13th century. The caretaker was a little grumpy at the beginning, but then it was alright. Perfect spot to go through the hanging bridge!"

Oldřich Olaf Poděbradský

"Stunning and free. We managed to gate crash a baptism... sorry to the family, but amazing experience and such atmosphere in there. We loved it."
