What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Dikteon Cave for its mythological significance and the stunning views of the Lasithi Plateau. However, many note the challenging hike and the steep, slippery conditions inside the cave, advising caution and proper footwear. Recent reports of closure for stabilization work are a key concern for potential visitors.
"Cave is closed (as of 17 Aug 2025) for stabilization works after the earthquake. Confirming this as I saw mixed reviews say the opposite lately.
Restaurant owners on the parking warn you about this, but we still took the exercise to at least see the view from the top.
The view is nice tho."

"Cave of Zeus – Crete
What an incredible place! This was one of the highlights of our family holiday last August.
To get there, you’ll need transportation up to the mountain area, and from there, prepare for a 40 to 60-minute hike. The first three-quarters of the trail is manageable, but the final stretch becomes quite uneven and rocky. Proper footwear is a must. Depending on the weather, especially the heat, it can feel quite exhausting at times.
Once at the top, you’ll find a small ticket booth before entering the cave. The descent into the Cave of Zeus is done through a rather unconventional staircase—narrow, steep, and often wet and humid. It’s a single-file experience, with people going down one after another. Inside the cave, you’ll walk down to the bottom while observing the natural formations, then make your way back up the same route.
There’s not much space inside to stop or admire the scenery for long, especially during the busy summer season, so it’s more of a walk-through experience than a place to linger.
Personally, I love this type of adventure, and even though it was a bit challenging, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I definitely recommend visiting if you’re up for a bit of a hike and a unique natural wonder"

"It’s a cool cave. Worth visiting and studying the myths around this. The walk up from the car park is about 15 minutes and can be hot. The views over the plateau are also worth it. The case itself has a walkway and stairs throughout and you can get tickets at the door as well as refreshments"
