What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Toplou Monastery to be a peaceful and historically rich destination with impressive fortified architecture. The on-site museum offers fascinating insights, and the monastery's shop is a highlight for its excellent organic wines and local products, often accompanied by knowledgeable staff. While photography is restricted inside, the overall experience is highly recommended for its historical significance and local flavors.
"I begin my day with a visit to the Toplou Monastery, built in 1452 — a place of peace and remembrance. As I arrive, the dazzling white façade stands out beautifully against the deep blue of the sky, inviting exploration. Inside, the church, adorned with ancient frescoes, and the museum, rich in icons and religious artifacts, bear witness to the site’s profound spiritual heritage.
I’m fortunate to attend the Sunday service. The monastery, standing in isolation amid the plains, gathers only six worshippers before four clergy: the higoumen, the gerondas, the deacon, and a tenor. The atmosphere is imbued with deep serenity. Light filters softly through a small window, less than fifty square centimeters wide, illuminating the colorful frescoes and golden ornaments. The air is heavy with incense — intense yet mesmerizing. An hour suspended in time, a true privilege.
After the service, we are invited to share Greek coffee and a few biscuits in a small room. The monks’ welcome is marked by a simple, sincere generosity — a moment of pure happiness."

"We visited Toplou Monastery and it was such a peaceful and inspiring experience. The place is full of history, beautiful architecture, and a sense of calm that makes you slow down and take it all in. We were lucky to join a school trip of local children, and shared the guided tour with them — it made the visit even more special and authentic! 💛
A truly charming spot, definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring eastern Crete."

"The monastery is a peaceful and historic place to visit. It was founded back in the late 14th century and played an important role during pirate attacks and Ottoman times. It has an impressive fortified look, with a beautiful Renaissance-style bell tower and some stunning frescoes inside. You can also check out the museum and buy their great organic wines made from local grapes."
