Best gorges to hike near Heraklion
Can anyone recommend a hike through a gorge near Heraklion? Something about 10 km long, a loop, with some beautiful views? Access only by car is okay. I know there are tons of websites with this info; the problem is trying to comb through them and identifying what's best 🙂

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Lake Zaros is praised for its serene natural beauty and excellent hiking opportunities, particularly Rouvas Gorge. Visitors enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and lakeside amenities. However, some reviews note concerns about the lake's cleanliness and trail maintenance, suggesting a decline from previous visits.
"I visited Lake Zaros in February on a beautiful sunny day and had the entire place to myself. The area was incredibly peaceful and scenic, making it a perfect spot to relax and take in nature. While the cafés and facilities were closed for the season, it’s clear that this is a popular spot in the summer.
We came here to do the hike from the lake up into Rouvas Forest and Gorge, which was absolutely spectacular. The trail is just over 10km there and back, offering stunning views and a great mix of terrain. This has quickly become my favorite area in central Crete—highly recommended for nature lovers and hikers!"

"Disappointment. The lake was not maintained. It was full of fish, birds and even some turtles that were swimming in a water full of dirt. Trail around it was also in a bad condition and difficult to walk. There was a cafe for some drinks, but that is all. Been there some years before and this place is nothing like before"

"Wonderful, neat place.
Small playground for the kids, a restaurant, a place for a picnic and a couple of routes to walk.
The lake is amazing!"
