What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Matapang Beach Park is praised for its family-friendly, calm, and shallow waters, making it ideal for swimming and young children. Visitors appreciate the beautiful sunsets and good snorkeling opportunities. Some note challenges in finding the entrance and inconsistent lifeguard presence.
"Nice beach with family-friendly environment.
The distance from the parking lot to beach wasn't bad.
There is a shower & restroom.
It looks like there could be lifeguards but there wasn't when I visited which was on weekday from afternoon to sunset."

"Got the recommendation from local celeb Lybia Chun (thank you!). There are not a lot of tourists and the beach was not crowded at all. Finding the entrance via car was a little challenging. You have to enter by the zoo and then turn left once in the main lot. Drive towards the end of the lot and the parking lot for the beach is on the right for close access. You can also park by the zoo and use the pedestrian path (the zoo is currently closed because of COVID). The water is so calm and warm. There is very little coral. This is the ideal beach for swimming - no strong currents, pretty shallow, and there is a lifeguard on duty. Si Yu'os Ma'åse' (thank you)!"

"Matapang Beach is located in Tumon Bay. This beach is one of the few beaches, not only on the shore, but also covered with sand in the water, without stones and corals. Matapang Beach is very shallow, so families with children often rest here. There is a zoo near the beach.
The sea in this part of Guam is very calm, without currents and strong waves. The water is crystal clear, blue with emerald green iridescence. Matapang Beach is small, clean and well maintained, several holiday houses, picnic areas, shower rooms and toilets.
Matapang Beach is a good place for snorkeling, fish are not afraid of people and beautiful coral reefs are located near the beach.
There are many canoes on the beach, constantly arriving or swimming on the beach. Many local residents and tourists arrive for special reasons to see the most incredible sunset on Matapang Beach Guam"

The Allure of Tumon Bay's Calm Waters
The clarity of the water is another major draw. Visitors often describe it as crystal clear, with beautiful blue and emerald green hues. This pristine condition is ideal for wading, swimming, and simply enjoying the serene coastal atmosphere. The gentle nature of the sea here means you can often see fish without even needing to snorkel, adding to the charm for casual beachgoers.
This tranquil environment is a stark contrast to the potential impact of typhoons, as seen with Typhoon Mawar. While recovery efforts are ongoing for some facilities on Guam, Matapang Beach Park's natural attributes of calm waters and sandy shores remain a consistent draw for those seeking a peaceful seaside escape.
Sunset Spectacles and Local Life
The beach also offers a glimpse into local life. It's a place where families gather, and canoes are often seen arriving or departing, adding a dynamic element to the scenery. This blend of natural beauty and local activity creates a unique and authentic atmosphere.
While the zoo nearby is currently closed due to COVID-19, the beach itself remains a vibrant hub for relaxation and enjoying the island's natural beauty. The combination of a stunning sunset and a relaxed, local vibe makes Matapang Beach Park a memorable destination.
Snorkeling and Marine Encounters
Visitors often note that the fish are not afraid of people, allowing for close and clear observations of marine life. This can lead to some fantastic photographic opportunities and a more immersive experience for snorkelers of all levels. The shallow depth of the water also means that even beginners can comfortably explore the underwater world.
While the beach itself is sandy, the presence of coral reefs nearby means you can witness a variety of colorful fish. It’s a great spot to get a taste of Guam’s marine biodiversity without needing to venture far out to sea. Remember to bring your own snorkel gear to make the most of this aquatic adventure.
