What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pacaya Volcano is widely praised for its accessible hiking trails and stunning volcanic landscapes, offering a unique encounter with an active volcano. Visitors rave about the unforgettable experience of eating pizza baked in volcanic heat and the breathtaking panoramic views. Some find the mandatory guide fees and optional horseback riding costs to be a bit high.
"Great for small hiking (2-4 level), better to go early since mid-day sun can hit hard if you're not used to altitude, nice people with horses to rent (little pushy).
I travel with a 60 y/o woman and I saw way older people and kids doing it.
Great views."

"Great hike! Our guide did a fantastic job and the views were great! Just be prepared for the 100q/person entry fee and the guide is 250-300q. A horse is 200q up and 100q down."
Russell Killian
"As soon as you arrive there’s a parking lot on your right that they will charge you 30Q to park there and tell you that your car is safe here and will be watched over for the entirety of your hike. But if you drive up and park at the entrance of the national park you can park for free. And your car is just as safe there. There’s bathrooms by the lot and a small hut to pay your entrance. You will be swarmed by “certified“ guides to take you up to the base of the crater. It’s 100Q per person if you’re a tourist and 30Q pp if you’re a citizen, to enter the national park and 200Q to hire a guide. They wouldn’t allow me to purchase wristbands without a guide. But I was able to negotiate one down to 100Q. If you speak Spanish it helps with negotiating. It’s a great hike up. It’s very steep in some places. It’s gets your heart rate going. I’m not very athletic so it took about 3 hrs to go up and 1 hour to go down. Once you get to the top there will be a 3 person bench facing the crater and a flagpole with no flag, that’s how you know you’ve reached the end of your hike. There’s no more trails past that point. Wear hiking boots and put your pant leg over your boots so your boots don’t go up with gravel. Also wear a hat to avoid sunburn on your scalp. It’s very painful. Bring extra Quetzals if you want to purchase pizza or a beverage or if you’re tired and want to ride a horse the rest of the way."
