What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Lake Atitlán for its breathtaking natural beauty, describing it as a 'secret oasis' and the 'Lake Como of Central America.' The diverse Mayan villages, stunning volcano backdrops, and the unique charm of accommodations like La Casa del Mundo are major highlights. While the beauty is undeniable, some mention the potential for choppy waters and the steep climbs in certain areas.
"Beautiful and full of history!
I did a day tour with CA travelers and it was great. our tour guide was super attentive and sweet - Francisco.
we visited 3 pueblos : ceramic factory, honey products factory and textile factory. very special and full of history. people are lovely.

"First thing to say is that it will take you about 2 hours from Antigua. Second thing to say is that you'll go through their Sierras (Mountains) and will fall in love with the scenery. Third and most important, when in Atitlan, get yourself a private boat (Lancha) so that you can more easily go between the various towns and don't have to wait or worry about time. We went with this route and in 1 day had the chance to see 4 little pueblos at a very leisurely pace (trust me this is what you'll want to spend your money on). The lake itself is amazing with a feeling of calm and peace. The pueblos dot the shores of the lake and each is known for something different, with different colors, cuisine, and sites. The miradores are the best way to gain the necessary elevation to take in the magnitude of the lake but be ready for a steep climb."

"Approaching Atitlan's shores, you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret oasis, a hidden gem that few have been lucky enough to discover. It's a place of rare beauty, once nominated for being among the world's new seven wonders. I definitely haven't seen a lake more spectacular. Surrounded by Mayan villages, Atitlan also neighbours with three cone-shaped volcanoes and hides ancient ruins underneath its waters."

Tailored advice for your travel style

Look for accommodations with pools or direct lake access for easy entertainment. Exploring the Villages of Lake Atitlán
Santa Cruz La Laguna offers a more laid-back experience with stunning lake views and opportunities for kayaking and hiking. Jaibalito is a tiny, charming village accessible primarily by boat, home to unique accommodations like La Casa del Mundo, perched dramatically on the cliffs. Santiago Atitlán, the largest of the Tzutujil Mayan towns, provides a deeper dive into traditional culture, with its own unique customs, markets, and the revered Maximón deity. Each village offers a different facet of the rich Mayan heritage and the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.
When planning your village hopping, consider the distinct personalities and offerings. Some travelers prefer to base themselves in one or two villages and take day trips, while others enjoy moving around to experience the full spectrum. Remember that boat schedules can be limited in the late afternoon, so plan your return trips accordingly.
The Magic of La Casa del Mundo
Visitors often rave about the peaceful ambiance and the opportunity to disconnect. The hotel encourages a communal atmosphere, with guests from diverse backgrounds sharing meals and experiences. The journey down the hundreds of stairs to reach the swimming balconies is an adventure in itself, rewarding visitors with direct access to the lake's refreshing waters. It's a place that captures the imagination and offers a truly memorable stay, often described as a 'paradise' or the 'Lake Como of Central America.'
While it offers a unique escape, it's worth noting that the many stairs can be challenging for those with mobility issues. However, for many, the effort is well worth the breathtaking views and the serene, almost otherworldly, experience. It's a prime example of the unique and beautiful accommodations found around Lake Atitlán.
Hiking and Adventure at Lake Atitlán
For more ambitious hikers, climbing Volcán Atitlán or Volcán San Pedro provides a more strenuous challenge and the chance to reach higher altitudes for even more expansive vistas. These hikes often require a guide and a full day commitment. The terrain can be steep and demanding, so good physical condition and proper hiking gear are essential.
Beyond hiking, the lake itself offers opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. Many villages have rental shops for water sports equipment. The calm mornings on the lake are ideal for paddling and enjoying the scenery from a different perspective. Exploring the lake by boat is also an adventure in itself, allowing you to discover hidden coves and enjoy the dramatic landscapes from the water.
