"Blissful Early Morning Bird Watching River Trip – Well worth the pre-dawn start!
After a hectic day sight-seeing around Georgetown, this trip along the Mahaica River was a wonderful escape into a truly tranquil environment.
I’d had to organise excursions by email and WhatsApp from the UK prior to my Guyana stay and the communications with Ramesh were excellent throughout. He was always prompt to respond and clear with his plans, timings and messaging.
We were picked up from our hotel at 4.45am – an early start, but well worth making the effort to be riverside at Mahaica Lodge by dawn. Before we even set out on the boat tour, we’d seen a golden oriole, a red cap cardinal, a tody-flycatcher, many grey breasted merlins and a large iguana.
Ramesh paced the trip very well and provided us with lots of interesting information about the river and the animal and birdlife along its banks. Within a couple of minutes of setting out we spotted the first of many hoatzin and a short while later we came across our first family of red howler monkeys. As the boat moved so gently through the water, we were able to get close to these and other creatures without startling them. In all, I noted over 20 different types of bird during our trip.
On returning to the lodge, we were treated to a delicious breakfast of fruit, salt fish and homemade bake prepared for us by Ramesh’s wife, Fazeena Shibsahai.
The whole experience was most enjoyable and memorable and I’d have no hesitation in recommending the trip to anyone visiting or living in Guyana."

"If you’re looking for peace and tranquility while site seeing, then this is your place. Visited Mahaica River Tours with my family and I had no expectation , other than to be driving up the river to see some birds” I am not a bird person “
We got there pretty early “ around 6:30am” which was wayyyyy too early for my liking but it was the best decision. The hosts were very welcoming and the boat captain exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable. We went some 20-30 minutes up the Mahaica river, we were told that this very unassuming location is home to over 90 different species of birds, and we were able to capture a few, such as the Canji Pheasant “ our national bird “Monkeys and water dogs were definitely not shy to our cameras.
Many persons yard, backs on to the river, creating such an ease to commute transport goods and even taking a quick boat ride up or across the river.
After the tour ended, we were treated to breakfast on the docks” freshly made roti, balanja choka, saltfish and your choice of hot beverage.
After breakfast we were able to play in the river, after which some of us retired to the hammocks provided.
This place is a hidden Gem and I which more persons would visit. If you don’t believe me, check it out for yourself.

"This is a fantastic experience. It is 1.5 hours outside of Georgetown. We arrived at night and arranged for a lovely home cooked meal from our hosts (it was delicious chicken curry). The room we stayed in was above the boat house and hung out over the river with a rap around balcony. It had AC, hot water and a surprisingly comfortable bed. We woke up to birds singing, so many varieties were visible just in the yard. Ramish and his family were so warm and kind. The river trip itself was 3 hours in a ver comfortable pontoon boat. We saw so many birds including a lot of canje pheasants! We also spotted howler monkeys several times. Ramish has a reasonable cab driver who will pick you up and get out there early in the morning and then wait for you to bring you back. Breakfast was also included and it was amazing home cooked veg. and fish dishes with fresh roti. Really amazing experience. Couldn’t recommend it more highly!"
