Reviews Summary

Budapest's public transport (BKV) is a vast network, praised for its extensive reach and scenic routes like Tram 2. However, users frequently report issues with app reliability, ticket validation enforcement, and occasional poor customer service from staff. Despite these drawbacks, it remains an essential and generally affordable way to explore the city.

"I took back my son's lost here. A professional and steady gentlemen asked the details, registered in the system and gave it back to me in a short time. Just 500 HUF for the procedure, it went smoothly beyond my imagination."

张丹

"Had to wait 30 minutes for the next bus because the driver kicked me off — all because their app wouldn’t load fast enough. I tried to scan the QR code outside the bus when it arrived, like they expect, and then boarded as instructed. But of course, the app glitched and froze right when I needed it. That’s why I stayed by the driver’s side — so he could see I was doing my part, struggling with their broken system. But none of that mattered. Instead of showing a shred of patience or common sense, he chose to throw me off the bus. So I was left standing there, all for an issue completely out of my control. A 30-minute delay because of a slow app and a zero-tolerance attitude. Ridiculous."

Senica Raymundo

"Deceitful tactics: you can get to the city from the airport or back by metro M3 and bus 200E for just the price of two regular tickets or it is included in a city pass.
Somehow they fail to show this route option on Google maps or on the Budapest Go app. They want to fool you into paying the extra high price for the airport bus with lousy service. It is just a regular bus with no place for luggage, narrow, cramped seats.
Several buses smell of exhaust fumes as if the toxic fumes would leak into the passanger area.
There is no safety personnel on crowded tramlines, often there is something going on that would need assistance.
At the same time, it is a wonder the decrepit system is still rolling along with all the lack of resources."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Budapest's Public Transport Network

Budapest's public transport system, managed by BKV (Budapesti Közlekedési Vállalat), is a comprehensive network of metro lines, trams, buses, and trolleys. The system is designed to connect all parts of the city, making it a primary mode of transportation for locals and tourists alike. While generally efficient, it's known for its occasional quirks and the need for careful ticket validation. TikTok

Key to navigating BKV is understanding the ticketing system. Single tickets are valid for one journey, but transfer tickets allow for one change of line within a set time. For tourists, travel passes (24-hour, 72-hour, weekly) offer unlimited travel and are usually the most economical choice. It's crucial to validate your ticket before boarding or immediately upon entry, as fines are substantial and strictly enforced. Reddit

Recent TikToks showcase the variety of vehicles, from modern CAF trams to historic Ikarus buses, highlighting the blend of old and new in Budapest's transport scene. TikTok+2 The BudapestGO app is intended to simplify journey planning and ticket purchasing, but user experiences suggest it can be unreliable, leading to frustration. Reddit

Budget-Friendly Airport Transfers

Getting from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) to the city center can be a point of confusion for travelers, with some unofficial sources pushing more expensive options. The most cost-effective and recommended method involves using a combination of public transport: bus 200E and the M3 metro line. Reddit

Take bus 200E from the airport to its final stop, Kőbánya-Kispest. From there, you can transfer to the M3 metro line, which will take you directly into the heart of Budapest. This route is significantly cheaper than the dedicated airport shuttle buses and offers a more authentic local experience, though the buses can be cramped and lack dedicated luggage space. Reddit

It's important to note that this budget-friendly route is often not prominently featured on navigation apps like Google Maps or even Budapest's own BudapestGO app. This can lead travelers to believe the more expensive options are the only ones available. Be aware of this and opt for the M3 metro and 200E bus combination to save money. Reddit

Iconic BKV Routes for Sightseeing

Beyond just getting from point A to point B, certain BKV routes offer incredible sightseeing opportunities, allowing you to experience Budapest's beauty from a unique perspective. Tram Line 2 is arguably the most scenic, running along the Pest side of the Danube. It provides breathtaking views of the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and the Chain Bridge, making it a must-do for any visitor. TikTok

The historic M1 metro line, also known as the Yellow Line, is another gem. As the second-oldest underground railway in Europe, it offers a charming journey through the city's past with its quaint stations and vintage carriages. Riding the M1 is like stepping back in time and is a delightful experience in itself. TikTok

For those interested in unique transport experiences, keep an eye out for Budapest's nostalgia trams. These beautifully restored vintage trams occasionally run on specific routes, offering a special way to see the city while enjoying a piece of transport history. TikTok+1
