What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Király Baths for its authentic 16th-century Turkish bath architecture and intimate atmosphere, offering a unique historical experience. However, the prolonged renovation closures since 2019 have caused significant disappointment, with concerns that planned modernizations might detract from its charm. The potential for crowds and the dim interior are minor drawbacks for some.
"Visited in 2016 to bathe in the historic baths during the women-only day. A fantastic experience, both for the architecture and the social aspect.
Sad to see (when recommending things to do and see in Budapest to a friend) that is has been closed for so long, and to renovate it in ways that will detract from the centuries old setting. 😞"

"Tourism represents more than 10% of Hungary’s economy, yet these baths have been closed since 2019 for “renovations” that, even in late 2024, have still not begun. The CGI images for the proposed works resemble a luxury hotel spa in Dubai and make nothing of Budapest’s communist-era heritage, which continues to draw visitors from across the world. Now Gellért Baths is also set to close for at least three years for renovations. Budapest’s beautifully imperfect thermal baths are central to its appeal and should be preserved carefully for locals and tourists alike. Let’s hope the authorities recognise this, and reopen the spa, before tourists start voting with their feet and heading to Bucharest or Prague instead. The charm of these historic public baths is at risk of being erased by well-intentioned yet tasteless architectural interventions, not to mention the disappearance of long-standing traditions such as men-only days, whose recent loss reflects today’s less socially tolerant mood in Hungary."

"We tried to go Saturday around 16:45, but didn't want to wait around for thirty minutes for folks to (maybe) leave. So we vowed to return in the morning on Sunday, and if there was still a wait.... Well, it worked out. We got there about ten. No line, no wait. It was pretty much as advertized. Old turkish baths. One large pool, one small 40°C pool for 8-10 people. Steam room, two saunas. We kept walking around trying to find the lockers, not knowing we had to go past the first aid area and the guy who appeared to be fast asleep from the time we got there until we left at noon. The only hydromassage is in the six person jacuzzi, and the water isn't that hot. I actually appreciated the old pools better. Of course, there's the 26°C pool, too, but that's one I personally never use. I'm there for the heat!!! None of the structures have pools over 40°C!!!"

The History and Architecture of Király Baths
Despite its historical significance, the baths have faced periods of closure for renovations. Concerns have been raised about proposed modernizations potentially detracting from its centuries-old setting, with some fearing a loss of its unique charm and historical integrity. The goal of preservation is to maintain the essence of these historic public baths for both locals and tourists, ensuring they remain a vital part of Budapest's cultural heritage.
The bath's location on the Buda side, in a quieter neighborhood, adds to its appeal as a less touristy option compared to some of its counterparts. The medieval style of the structure, combined with its functional bathing facilities, provides a unique glimpse into the past.
Understanding the Renovation Situation
There are concerns among visitors and locals that the planned renovations might alter the historic character of the baths. The proposed designs have been likened to modern luxury spas, raising fears that the authentic, centuries-old atmosphere could be lost. This has sparked a debate about balancing modernization with the preservation of Budapest's unique heritage.
Travelers planning a visit should always verify the current operational status of Király Baths through official channels or recent local reports. If the baths remain closed or partially accessible, alternative historic thermal baths in Budapest, such as Veli Bej Baths, are recommended.
