Prepare for Darkness & Rough Terrain

Access & Safety Considerations

While some reviews mention managing with 2WD, a 4x4 is recommended for the gravel road. The cave has multiple entrances and exits, but not all are easily navigable. Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Surtshellir Lava Cave as a unique and thrilling free adventure, highlighting the raw, unguided exploration of Iceland's longest lava tube. While the darkness and challenging terrain are part of the appeal, reviewers strongly emphasize the need for proper gear like headlamps, sturdy boots, and warm clothing to navigate safely. Some mention the gravel road access can be tricky.

"One of the most unique experiences on our trip. We came across this place on the map and decided to explore. About a 15 minutes drive on a gravel road with a 2WD suv got us to the parking spot quite easily.

We entered through the first cave and after some hesitation decided to keep going into the darkness. It is pitch black inside so if you have flashlights of head lamps it would be super helpful. We went in with our phone flashlights.

The cave an be quite tricky to traverse and we did it slowly with our 4 and 7 year old kids. You can’t get out in holes 2 and 3 and the next exit from the cave is in opening 4 (or 5 and 6). Quick walk back to the car from there.

Super fun and free experience!"

"Interesting lava cave and lava fields. We chose to come on a whim and it was worth the drive. The road says you need a 4x4 vehicle, we managed fine today in dry conditions without one."

Danielle Mader

"Visited 16th July 2025. We entered through entrance 1 and continued for a couple hundred meters to reach complete darkness, then returned. If you want a nice experience of going through the tunnel, make sure to have very sturdy shoes (not just soft sneakers), proper headtorches (no, iPhone light is not enough), warm and sturdy clothing (it’s cold down there and anything gets ripped easily). Caving helmet would be ideal but a woolly hat is better than nothing (if you bump your head against the rocks. For me good gloves were essential as you need to grab the rocks to climb over them and they are super sharp. It’s a mega cool experience, we were completely alone, the darkness is magnificent and who can say they climbed through Iceland’s longest lava tunnel eh? In other places on Iceland, you pay a lot of money for the guided tour but this is genuine hiking/climbing, and not elevated walkways with full lighting."

Navigating the Darkness: Essential Gear

Surtshellir Lava Cave is a testament to nature's raw power, but its beauty is veiled in absolute darkness. Visitors must come equipped with reliable light sources. Headlamps are highly recommended as they keep your hands free for climbing and navigating. Bring extra batteries or a backup light. Phone flashlights are generally insufficient and can drain your battery quickly. Beyond lighting, sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable. The cave floor is a treacherous mix of loose rocks, sharp edges, and slippery patches. Warm, durable clothing is also essential, as the cave temperature remains consistently cold, and the rough surfaces can easily snag or tear lighter fabrics. Consider bringing work gloves for added grip and protection when scrambling over rocks. Reddit

Planning your route is part of the adventure. Surtshellir has multiple entrances and exits, but not all are easily accessible or safe to use. Some reviews mention specific entrance numbers and their corresponding exit points. It's wise to research these beforehand or have a general understanding of the cave's layout. Remember, this is an unguided experience, so your preparedness directly impacts your safety and enjoyment. The free access is a major draw, but it means you are solely responsible for your well-being within this natural wonder. Reddit

Archaeological remains found within the cave offer insights into how humans have utilized this unique environment throughout history. These findings suggest that the cave may have served as a shelter or a place for storage for early settlers in Iceland. The presence of these remnants adds another layer of fascination to the exploration, allowing visitors to connect with the past as they traverse the ancient lava flows. Reddit

Exploring these areas requires careful observation and respect for the delicate nature of the site. While the cave is largely undeveloped, it's important to tread lightly and avoid disturbing any potential artifacts or formations. The archaeological remains are a reminder of the long human history intertwined with Iceland's dramatic landscapes, making Surtshellir a destination that appeals to both nature enthusiasts and history buffs.
