Hverfjall, also known as Hverfell, is a large, nearly perfectly round tephra cone or tuff ring volcano in northern Iceland, east of Lake Mývatn. It was formed approximately 2,500 years ago during an explosive eruption triggered by magma interacting with groundwater, creating a massive, symmetrical crater about 1 kilometer wide. #iceland #volcano #landscape #natgeo #natheoyourshot #dji #djiglobal ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Hverfjall's immense crater and the surreal, moon-like landscape. The hike around the rim is a highlight, offering stunning panoramic views of Lake Mývatn. While the initial climb can be steep, the overall experience is considered well worth the effort, with many appreciating the lack of crowds and well-maintained facilities.

"The biggest crater in the area. A mildly grueling climb up the side of the crater, followed by a long and beautiful walk around the rim. It was very windy when we were there, but the views of the area were still excellent. It was mind boggling to be walking around the rim while contemplating and imagining the scale of the lava and fire that must have spurted from this volcano to form the surrounding geography.

We also walked around in the surrounding black sands and lava fields for a fully immersive experience."

Kev Zhu

"Not crowded, maybe its because we went while it was quite windy and raining. It was a fantastic experience to go to the top and see the view from there. The wind is especially strong when you are at the top, so do wear the proper gear. Parking is around 7-8 Euros I believe, and the toilets next to the parking were very well maintained and clean."

Zeynep Mutlusoy

"Great walk around the huge crater. The crater itself is humongous and pretty cool to look at from a few different angles when you walk around. The hike itself is 20 minutes up to the top and takes around 1 hour to go around the whole 2 mile loop around the crater. Highly recommend!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Hverfjall

Hverfjall, also known as Hverfell, is a spectacular tuff ring volcano that formed approximately 2,500 years ago. Its creation was a dramatic event, resulting from a powerful, explosive eruption where magma interacted violently with groundwater. This phreatomagmatic eruption ejected vast quantities of volcanic ash and rock fragments, which then settled around the vent to form the nearly perfect circular crater we see today. The volcano is a prime example of Iceland's dynamic geological activity. TikTokInstagram

The crater itself is immense, measuring about 1 kilometer in diameter and 140 meters in depth. Its symmetrical shape is remarkably well-preserved, making it one of the most impressive volcanic craters in the world. Walking around the rim offers a profound sense of the forces that shaped this landscape, with views stretching across the unique Mývatn region. Instagram

Exploring Hverfjall is like stepping onto another planet. The slopes are covered in dark, loose tephra, and the surrounding area features stark lava fields and black sand deserts. This 'moonscape' quality is a major draw for visitors seeking unique natural wonders and photographic opportunities. InstagramReddit

Hiking the Crater Rim

The hike to the top of Hverfjall is a highlight for many visitors. There are two main paths that lead from the parking area to the crater's edge. The ascent is steep, requiring a moderate level of fitness, but it's well worth the effort. The path is primarily composed of loose volcanic ash and gravel, so sturdy footwear is essential. Reddit

Once you reach the rim, a relatively flat, 2-mile (3.2 km) loop trail allows you to circumnavigate the entire crater. This walk provides continuous, breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Mývatn, the surrounding geothermal areas, and the vast Icelandic landscape. Many visitors describe the experience as feeling like they are on the moon, a testament to the otherworldly scenery. InstagramReddit

Allow at least 1 to 2 hours for the entire experience, including the climb, the rim walk, and time to soak in the views and take photos. Be prepared for strong winds, which are common at this exposed elevation. Wearing layers, including windproof and waterproof gear, is highly recommended. Reddit
