Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Gljúfrasteinn for its intimate portrayal of Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness's life and home. The well-produced audio tour is a highlight, offering fascinating insights without being overly long. The house itself, with its tasteful decor and beautiful surroundings, leaves a lasting impression, often inspiring visitors to explore Laxness's literary works.

"Never read a single book by Laxness before I visited this museum. After walking around the house with the recorded guide, I ended up buying four books. Wonderful house, and a very interesting author. The people working there were very helpful, especially the one working at the reception, who gave us great advice on which books to buy. She was very knowledgeable, she had even done her bachelor thesis on Laxness"

"This was a bit of a pilgrimage for me… Halldór Laxness— despite being a Nobel-prize winning author— is still such an under-appreciated writer in the USA. But he is on my personal Mt. Rushmore of all-time favorite writers (with Tolstoy, Ian McEwan, and Lauren Groff).
I made my family (wife and 2 boys, 10 and 12) take a little detour to go here.
They were annoyed at first, but they ended up enjoying the audio tour of the house. It was the perfect duration, about 20-25 minutes. They enjoyed learning about Laxness himself and about Icelandic life. The guide was friendly and helpful.
If you have read any of Laxness’s books, you must go. If you haven’t, you should go and learn about him and buy a copy of Independent People while you are there."

"Beautiful experience, a glimpse of life of a brilliant writer. Highly recommended. Took my 8 year old (not big fan of musuem) n he enjoyed it. ~40mins"
