What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Stykkisholmur is praised as a beautiful and charming fishing village, offering picturesque harbor views and good dining options. Visitors appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and scenic beauty, making it a worthwhile stop on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. However, some find the paid parking system and its associated app to be inconvenient and time-consuming.
"Beware of the paid parking at the harbour ... its not well marked until you park and read the sign by which time it's too late. We pulled up to take a photo and had to pay 500 isk for a 2 minute stop (nothing was open) in order to avoid a fine. This was less of a problem than installing the payment app which was ludicrously difficult and time consuming taking nearly 20 mins of lost sight seeing time. Id rather have spent money in the bakery than on this extortion scheme but there was no time."

"Besides being the port for the ferry crossing to the Westfjords, this is one of the prettiest villages we’ve seen in Iceland, with good restaurants."

"Late November. Short, cold days. We’d spent the previous day doing the tourist trail around the Golden Circle, and wanted to get away from the crowds and see more of the country. The information man at the hotel in Reykjavik suggested we head north and mentioned a small fishing village: Stykkishólmur. So that’s where we headed. We arrived on the quayside just after a beautiful sunset and the village seemed deserted. It wasn’t, it’s just that it was very cold and anyone with any sense was indoors. We made tea, took some photos, walked around, watched the fishing boats come in and unload, and then headed back to Reykjavik with the added bonus of a great display of the Northern Lights."
