"During 1956, Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology was established with the joint efforts of Shri. Kasturbhai Lalbhai, a wellknown and prominent Ahmedabad based industrialist, and Jain Acharya Muni. Punyavijayji. Muni. Punyavijayji donated his personal collection of illustrated and un-illustrated manuscripts, bronzes and cloth paintings at time at the establishment of Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Indological Institute. With the passage of time the collection grew more and more prominent which created a need for an exclusive display of the artifacts. Thus, in 1984 a new building adjacent to the L.D. Institute of Indology was built by internationally acclaimed architect Shri. Balakrishna Doshi. The L.D. Museum was formally inaugurated by Shri. Brajkumar Nehru, the then Governor of Gujarat in 1985.

Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum is open from 10:30 AM in the morning till 5:30 PM in the evening on all days except for Mondays and public holidays. For group visits, the museum has to be informed earlier and can take a guided tour. There is no entry fee to visit Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum.

Architectural Marvel by B.V. Doshi

The Significance of the L.D. Institute of Indology

The Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum is intrinsically linked to the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology (L.D. Institute of Indology), which was established in 1956 through the collaborative efforts of industrialist Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Jain Acharya Muni Punyavijayji. Muni Punyavijayji's personal collection of illustrated and un-illustrated manuscripts, bronzes, and cloth paintings formed the initial core of the institute's holdings. Reddit

As the collection grew in prominence, the need for a dedicated space for display became apparent. This led to the construction of a new building adjacent to the Institute, designed by Balkrishna Doshi, which formally inaugurated the L.D. Museum in 1985. The museum, therefore, serves as a vital extension of the Institute's mission to preserve and promote Indological studies, particularly focusing on Jainism and Indian art history. Reddit

The museum houses a significant portion of the Institute's vast collection, including over 76,000 rare manuscripts and a substantial number of printed books. This symbiotic relationship ensures that the artifacts are not only displayed but also studied and preserved for future generations, making the L.D. Museum a crucial center for cultural heritage research and appreciation. Instagram
