Timing is Everything

The Banasura Hill Trek is best enjoyed during the cooler, drier months. While monsoon offers lush greenery, it also brings leeches and slippery trails. Consider visiting during the post-monsoon season for clear views and manageable conditions. Early mornings are ideal to avoid the midday heat and potential crowds.

Permissions and Guides

Access to the actual summit of Banasura Hill requires special permission and a full-day trek. For most visitors, the trek to viewpoints like Kattu Kunn or Sayippu Kunn is more accessible. Hiring a local forest guide is highly recommended for safety, insights, and a richer experience. They can also advise on wildlife encounters and trail conditions.

Reviews Summary

Banasura Hill Trek is lauded for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the Banasura Sagar Dam, offering a moderately challenging yet rewarding experience. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained trails and the lush greenery, especially during the post-monsoon season. However, some find the trek costlier than comparable treks in other regions, and leeches can be a concern during certain times of the year.

"A beautiful trekking spot near Banasura Sagar dam. Moderate trek needed to reach the top the hill station. Well maintained without any plastics or wastes. Trek here during monsoon is an experience."

"You aren't climbing Banasura Hill. And that's okay, because the hills you are climbing speaks for themselves.

We hiked to Sayippu Kunn, 3000-4000ft above sea level (as informed by our forest guide). There are 2 little peaks before the summit. As there isn't permission to climb to the summit, we could only climb till the second peak.

Adjacent to the same is Kattu Kunn (Windy hill). While Sayippu Kunnu is a little steep and higher, providing a challenging experience for one who is looking for a bit of technical climbing (like myself), Kattu Kunn offers the grand view of the Banasura reservoir, and like the name it is quite windy up there.

If you are lucky, or god forbid, unlucky, you might be able to spot wild animals such as elephants, wild bulls or fox. We were able to spot some wild bull grazing on our path to Sayipp Kunn. Once they spotted us they quickly moved into the forest.

Our forest guide, Manu chettan, made sure we had the maximum experience our trek. He made sure we got sufficient rest in between, warned us of the different dangers, educated us on how to act in certain situations and we had a fun time talking about his prior experiences and other conversations.

The trek wasn't hard. It was somewhat moderate. It took 5 hours for us to climb up and down and we covered 10km in total.

Now, what to expect if you're trekking in May.
1. It's really hot, carrying a minimum 2L of water per person and some fruits for snacking in between.
2. Carrying a cap is a good idea.
3. Since it's summer the visibility around the hills are great and gives you a beautiful view accross Banasura.
4. You should definitely visit in summer, because although it's hot and tiring, it's the best view you can get."

"Tourists are restricted for a few kilometres. We need proper permission from the authorities to enter other areas, which are only restricted for research purposes. Reaching the actual peak is needed a heavy and full day Trek. The peak has an elevation of 2060m(around 6760ft) and stunted forest."
