Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique experience with its crocodile population and dry deciduous forests. While some visitors appreciate the ability to drive their own vehicles and the historical hunting towers, others find wildlife sightings limited and the terrain challenging. The lack of amenities and network coverage are points to consider.
"Bassi wildlife sanctuary is situated in the east of the historical city of Chittorgarh near Bassi village 25 Kms East of Chittorgarh on Kota Highway, 175 Kms from Kota on Udaipur Highway and 140 Kms from Udaipur on Kota Highway, Rajasthan, India. It can be accessed by personal vehicle or hired Cab. It also can be accessed by Rail as the nearest Railway Station is Bassi-Berisal. It comes under the Meghpura Forest Range, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, India. It's a popular eco tourism site.
The whole area of the sanctuary falls in Vindhyan hill range.
The forests here used to be the hunting ground for erstwhile rulers of former Mewar state specially for tiger shooting
shooting towers in the sanctuary are worth seeing.
I got the opportunity to know many facts related to the life of crocodiles, some of the important facts are as follows.
Crocodile cleans the environment by cleaning many impurities from water.
Crocodile breeds in the months of November to March and makes a mound of grass and soil and lays eggs in it. A female crocodile lays about 50 eggs at a time, from which the babies come out in 65 to 110 days.
Crocodiles are among those unique reptiles whose heart has four chambers like humans and they can hold their breath like humans. It has been observed that a crocodile can hold its breath for four to six hours under water.
Crocodiles also have a third eyelid which does not move up and down but moves from right to left. It helps the crocodile to see while swimming in water.
Crocodiles are expert in returning to their homes. They can travel up to 60 kms. to return to their place. Please help in saving crocodiles.
The Bassi Wildlife is a Nature's Wonder and Crocodile Sanctuary where on the banks of Chambal river they find a safe refuge. While visiting long range binoculars are provided by the forest officers and visitors are instructed not to go near the river banks.
Therefore, it is our moral responsibility to cooperate in the conservation of crocodiles so that the environment can remain safe and clean.
I would like to suggest that tourists must carry water and little snacks. Here the entree fee is quite nominal for locals but high for the international tourists. Further tourists must remain cautious as beasts may harm our lives."

"Don't go there for wildlife or birding. Only good thing is one can drive a personal car inside the jungle. View points are obstructed by trees. Worst are the timings. The time they allow you inside, the animals and birds are gone in their hides. One can only see Langurs, Neelagais and cake in the name of animals.
330 for car and 190 for each Indian adult."

"Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, barely 5 kilometres away from the Bassi Fort Palace and is an important natural reserve of the state. The sanctuary expands over an area of 150 square kilometres on the west border of the Vindhyachal Mountain Ranges and many water channels and lakes that are essential for the vegetation. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna in the region. The forest is dry deciduous and has trees like the Dhok, Churel, Butea along with a variety of medicinal herbs and flowering plants. Tourists can go on a jeep safari arranged by the forest officials. These safaris have a guide accompanying the visitors who can provide more information about the sanctuary."

Understanding the Crocodiles of Bassi
Interestingly, crocodiles share a unique biological trait with humans: a four-chambered heart. They are also capable of holding their breath underwater for extended periods, sometimes up to four to six hours. A remarkable adaptation is their third eyelid, which moves horizontally, aiding their vision while swimming. Crocodiles possess an incredible homing instinct, capable of traveling up to 60 kilometers to return to their familiar territory.
Visitors are advised to observe these creatures from a safe distance, as forest officers often provide binoculars and instructions not to approach the riverbanks. Cooperating in crocodile conservation efforts is vital for maintaining a safe and clean environment.
Navigating Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary

This means that sightings of larger mammals and birds might be limited, with langurs and nilgai being more commonly observed.
There's a mention of a lack of network coverage within the sanctuary, so it's advisable to download offline maps and inform someone about your travel plans. Forest guards may not always accompany visitors, so self-reliance and caution are key.
Flora and Fauna of Bassi
Beyond the vegetation, the sanctuary is home to a range of fauna. Mammals like mongooses, leopards, and porcupines are present, though sightings can be elusive. Langurs and nilgai are more frequently encountered. The sanctuary is also a haven for various bird species, including migratory birds, making it a potential spot for birdwatching, though some visitors have expressed disappointment with sightings.
