What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Gorewada Zoo for its well-maintained facilities, ample parking, and the exciting safari experience, especially for families. The opportunity to see tigers, leopards, and bears in naturalistic enclosures is a major draw. Some find the safari duration a bit short, and food prices are noted as premium.
"Visited Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park (Nagpur) — formerly the Gorewada Zoo. The park was conceptualised in 2006 when the Maharashtra government earmarked approx. 1,914 ha of forest land adjoining Gorewada Lake for the project.
It opened formally on 26 January 2021 under its present name.
The park is clean and well maintained, with ample parking. For children there are toy buses and camel rides, adding to the fun. We took the AC safari bus (runs every 15-30 minutes) costing around ₹300-₹400 depending on day; sitting up front gave a much better view. There are four major animal enclosures: leopard, bear, deer/herbivores and tigers. We were lucky enough to see a leopard walking right in front of our bus and all three tigers in clear view.
Overall, the place is worth a visit for wildlife lovers and families — great for a half-day excursion from Nagpur.
✳️ Tip: Book ahead (on busy days) and aim for the front seats in the safari bus."

"Ample parking is available, and on-site dining options are provided. Guests are also permitted to bring their own food for picnics. Please note that food and beverages within the zoo's food court are priced at a premium, and motorcycle parking is ₹15. A souvenir shop is located on the premises. Children's attractions, including trampolines, toy trains, and jumping houses, are available for ₹70 each. Air-conditioned bus service is offered at ₹300 per person. Online booking is highly recommended to avoid potential wait times exceeding one hour for in-person ticket purchases. The safari, while Short, offers an enjoyable experience. Overall, this destination provides a positive experience for first-time visitors."

To maximize your experience, it's advised to opt for the front seats on the bus, as this offers the best vantage point for spotting animals and for photography. The drivers are often accommodating, sometimes backing up or pausing to give visitors a better look. While the safari is a highlight, remember that animals are in enclosures, and sightings are not guaranteed, though the park is known for good visibility of its main attractions.

The park's design emphasizes creating naturalistic habitats for its diverse animal collection. It's not just a zoo but an international zoological park, reflecting a commitment to global standards in animal welfare and display. The inclusion of various safaris, such as tiger, bear, and leopard safaris, provides an immersive experience that goes beyond traditional zoo visits.
Beyond the animal enclosures, the surrounding area, including Gorewada Lake, offers opportunities for nature walks and birdwatching, making it a comprehensive nature and wildlife destination. Photography at Gorewada Zoo
While personal cameras are welcome, it's important to be mindful of the animals. Avoid using flash photography directly at the animals, as it can startle or distress them. A good zoom lens is highly recommended, as animals are often at a distance within their enclosures. Early morning and late afternoon light can offer softer, more dramatic lighting for your photographs.
Remember that the goal is to capture the essence of the animals in their environment. Be patient, observe their behavior, and try to anticipate their movements. The naturalistic enclosures, while not wild, offer a good backdrop for compelling wildlife shots.
