Reviews Summary

Chowrasta and Bhutia Market are celebrated for their vibrant atmosphere, stunning mountain views, and diverse shopping opportunities, offering authentic local crafts and delicious Tibetan cuisine. Visitors appreciate the pedestrian-friendly Mall Road and the chance to bargain for unique souvenirs. However, some note that cleanliness could be improved, and certain popular spots might feel overhyped.

"It’s a charming Mall Road lined with cozy cafés, souvenir shops, and the Mahakal Mandir just a short walk away."

Sayak Haldar

"The Mall Market in Darjeeling, often simply referred to as "The Mall," is a bustling and vibrant promenade located in the heart of the town. It is one of the most popular spots for both tourists and locals, offering a unique blend of shopping, dining, and sightseeing. The Mall stretches along the Ridge, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains, including the majestic Kanchenjunga, on clear days.

The Mall Market is a pedestrian-only zone, which adds to its charm and makes it an ideal place for leisurely walks. It is lined with a variety of shops, stalls, and eateries offering everything from traditional Darjeeling tea and woolen clothes to handicrafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. Visitors can enjoy the local culture through the items sold, such as Tibetan and Nepalese artifacts, woolen shawls, and handwoven carpets.

The Mall also features historical buildings, colonial-era architecture, and landmarks, such as the iconic Chowrasta, a popular meeting point. This open square at the top of the Mall is often filled with people enjoying the views, street performances, or simply relaxing on the benches.

Many restaurants, cafes, and bakeries line the Mall, offering delicious local and international cuisine, making it a great place to sample Darjeeling's famous momos, thukpa (noodle soup), or freshly brewed tea. The atmosphere is lively, and the cool mountain climate adds to the appeal of spending time at this charming market.

Overall, the Mall Market is a perfect blend of shopping, culture, and scenic beauty, making it a must-visit destination in Darjeeling."

"Mall market or the chowrasta, the heart of Darjeeling town, is a great place to shop woolens, curated decor items, antiques, stone work dishware and jewellery at dirt cheap rates. This is one of the oldest market in the town and is ran by multiple locals. If you walk by the market, you will find shop keepers selling their stuffs and as well as weaving winter wears which is a great sight to experience. Also, since these are handmade and the textiles are picked by locals and not mass produced, they do add to sustainability and protect our planet for longer. I was excited to find colorful hand woven fabrics for such great prices, the contentment of which is difficult to find in machine made items. While you are in Darjeeling, I would definitely recommend you to make the most of your trip by shopping in this market with all the verve that you have got.
If people can keep it more clean by not throwing wrappers and food leftovers here and there, this would be better."
