"Dirgheswari Temple located in the northern banks of the river Brahmaputra in North Guwahati. Dirgheswari temple is considered as a Shakta pitha for Shakti worship. Since ancient times, Dirgheswari was a prominent place of Worship for the followers of Shakti cult of Assam. It is said that when Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva died, Lord Shiva, in his grief was carrying her dead body around the world. In order to pacify Shiva, Lord Vishnu and other Gods decided to get rid of the body of Sati, which had become a source of sorrow for Mahadeva. Lord Vishnu instructed his disc, Sudarshan Chakra, to cut the body of Sati into several parts. The Sudarshan Chakra acted as instructed, and the pieces of Sati's body were scattered in different parts of the world. Revered as an important Shakti Peetha, it offers an experience that blends deep mythology, breathtaking natural beauty, and centuries-old heritage.

Spiritual Vibes

Dirgheswari is believed to be a site where parts of Goddess Sati’s body fell, making it a sacred Shakti Upa Peetha. The temple is often considered the second holiest after Kamakhya. The deity, Goddess Durga, is worshipped in a unique cave-like sanctum, where she is said to have appeared in a self-manifested (Svayambhu) form. The sanctity of the space is palpable, especially during Durga Puja, Ambubachi Mela, and Modon Chaturdashi, when the temple comes alive with rituals, offerings, and vibrant devotion.

The present structure dates back to the Ahom dynasty in the early 18th century, constructed by King Siva Singha. Ancient rock carvings of deities like Ganesha, Hanuman, and Vishnu are scattered across the hill, some of which are believed to be over 1000 years old. The architecture may seem modest compared to grand temples elsewhere, but its spiritual aura and archaeological richness more than compensate.

Reaching the temple involves climbing a long flight of stairs through peaceful, forested paths, accompanied by the sounds of birds and temple bells. Once at the top, the panoramic view of the Brahmaputra and Guwahati city below is simply stunning. The peacefulness of the environment adds to the temple’s mystical charm.

Both Vedic and Tantric rituals are practiced here. One unique and intense aspect is the animal sacrifice tradition during major festivals, which may be culturally rich but emotionally intense for some visitors. Local devotees participate wholeheartedly, and the temple priests are generally welcoming to outsiders.
