The Gwalior Fort was built in 3 CE by a local king called Suraj Sen. A saint named Gwalipa came wandering to the fort and met the king, who was suffering from leprosy. When Gwalipa offered him some water from a sacred pond (now called Suraj Kund and located within the fort complex), he immediately became healthy again. As a thankful gesture to the saint, the king named the fort and the town after...

Reviews Summary

Suraj Kund is praised for its historical significance and unique legend, especially its transformation into a beautiful spot with waterfalls during the monsoon. While its architectural beauty and spiritual ambiance are appreciated, some visitors note that the water could benefit from better cleaning and the area from further development to enhance its overall appeal.

"Built by Raja Suraj Sen, founder of Gwalior fort. Kund built by him in 6th century. Named after him. One of the oldest structures in Gwalior fort hill top."

Amit Dey

"Beautiful & historical pond in Gwalior Fort. The Kund derives its name from king Suraj Sen who reined during 8th century. Place has an interesting story.

Story goes like this. King Suraj Sen felt thirsty during hunting. He saw an ascetic & asked for water. Sage named Gwalipa directed the king to the pond.

King not only quenched his thirst but at the same time was cured of his leprosy. As per desire of sage he fortified the area by building a wall which eventually turned into a Fort & city. King named the city as Gwalipa. Over a period of time Gwalipa became Gwalior. Small Shiva Temple is there. Pond has lotus flowers in season. Surrounding area is lush green.
Remains open from morning to evening. No ticket."

Harsh Wardhan Jog

"Beautiful pond on the way to Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod. There is a Shiv temple in the middle of it."
