The temple stands on a raised, star-shaped platform called a “jagati,” designed for ritual circumambulation and to provide spectacular viewing angles of the detailed carvings. The layout features two main shrines side by side—one for “Hoysaleswara” (King) and the other for “Shantaleswara” (Queen)—both containing Shiva lingas and sharing a large open hall (navaranga) for gatherings.
The temple is carved from soft soapstone, enabling extremely intricate work. There are more than 340 large reliefs and numerous smaller panels, primarily illustrating stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana, as well as scenes from daily life, music, and dance. The exteriors feature eight horizontal friezes at the base, displaying elephants, lions, horses, and creatures, above which are large figurative panels of gods and celestial dancers. Notable are richly adorned Nandi shrines, a Surya shrine with a 2-meter-tall deity, and lathe-turned, polished pillars inside the main hall."
