What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers rave about the Hampta Pass trek's breathtaking scenery, especially the dramatic shift from lush valleys to arid landscapes. The exhilarating river crossings and magical campsites are frequently highlighted as unforgettable experiences. While challenging, the trek offers immense rewards and a deep connection with nature.
"In June, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Hamta Pass with five of my close friends. The excitement had been building for weeks, and finally standing at the base of the trek felt surreal. The weather was mostly pleasant with a few light drizzles that added to the charm of the lush green landscapes.
Although we didn’t witness snowfall, the trek offered its own thrills. One of the most exciting moments was crossing icy, fast-flowing rivers barefoot—it tested our nerves but left us laughing and energized. The campsites along the way were peaceful and surrounded by towering mountains and vibrant meadows. After long hours of trekking, the simple joy of eating freshly prepared, warm food in the middle of the Himalayas felt like luxury.
The trek wasn’t technically challenging, but exhaustion was our constant companion. The continuous climb and long walking hours pushed our limits, yet we kept moving, supporting each other along the way. Each step felt worthwhile as we crossed the breathtaking Hamta Pass and descended into the contrasting barren beauty of Spiti Valley.
The journey didn’t end there—we were lucky to visit the stunning Chandratal Lake. Its crystal-clear blue waters surrounded by dramatic mountains made it feel like we had arrived at a place straight out of a dream.
This trek was more than just a physical journey; it was about friendship, resilience, and soaking in the raw beauty of nature. It’s an experience I will carry with me forever.🫶🌈❤️"

"Having just completed the Hampta Pass trek in 30th May 2025, I can confidently say it's an experience you won't soon forget!
What I loved:
Dramatic Landscape Shift: The highlight truly is witnessing the incredible transition from the verdant, forested Kullu Valley to the stark, arid, almost lunar landscape of Lahaul. Standing at Hampta Pass (around 14,000 ft) and seeing two completely different worlds unfold before your eyes is simply breathtaking.
Snow Beauty: Despite the occasional rain, the meadows were bursting with snow, wildflowers, the streams were gushing, and the entire valley was a brilliant green. The misty clouds often added a dramatic, ethereal feel to the scenery. Be prepared for slippery sections, but the beauty makes it all worthwhile.
Challenging but Rewarding: The trek is rated moderate, and I'd agree. It's not a walk in the park, with some steep ascents, rocky terrains, and exhilarating river crossings (be ready for cold, gushing water and sometimes ropes!). However, with good preparation and a decent fitness level, it's very doable for fit beginners. The sense of accomplishment at the pass is immense.
Magical Campsites: The campsites, especially Balu Ka Ghera and Shea Goru, are absolutely stunning. Sleeping under a blanket of stars (weather permitting) with the sound of the river nearby is pure bliss.
Chandratal Lake (Optional but a Must!): The drive to Chandratal Lake at the end is the perfect grand finale. This crescent-shaped, high-altitude lake with its ever-changing hues is truly mesmerizing and worth the bumpy ride."

It's essential to pack warm layers, including thermal wear, fleece jackets, and a waterproof outer shell. A good quality sleeping bag is also recommended, though often provided by trekking agencies.
Choosing a Trekking Operator
When selecting an operator, consider factors such as group size, guide-to-trekker ratio, inclusions (food, accommodation, gear rental), and safety protocols.
