What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Andul Rajbari is a historically significant heritage site with impressive classical architecture, particularly its Doric pillar and temple complex. Visitors appreciate its grandeur and potential, though many note that parts of the palace are in disrepair and require maintenance. It's considered a peaceful spot for history lovers and photographers, especially during quieter hours.
"Andul Rajbari, located in the town of Andul in Howrah district of West Bengal, is one of the region’s most remarkable heritage structures. Built around 1834 by Raja Rajnarayan Bahadur of the Roy family, the palace reflects the grandeur and cultural richness of Bengal’s zamindari era. Its architecture is especially notable for the tall Greek-inspired Doric pillar that stands prominently in front of the building, giving the Rajbari a classical and majestic appearance. The three-storied palace, once more than sixty feet high, was constructed by the Granville Macleod Company during the British period.
Beside the palace stands a beautiful temple complex, including the Annapurna Temple and fourteen Shiva temples arranged in a semicircle. The Annapurna Temple originally housed an ashtadhatu (eight-metal) idol, which was later stolen, and the temple now contains concrete idols. Despite this loss, the temple continues to be a major spiritual and cultural centre for the people of the area.
Durga Puja at Andul Rajbari has been a major attraction for centuries. Historical accounts suggest that even Lord Clive attended the celebrations in the past. The puja was known for its grandeur, music, rituals, and the firing of cannons during the immersion ceremony.
Today, although parts of Andul Rajbari have fallen into disrepair, the palace remains a significant symbol of heritage. Some portions are inhabited, and a girls’ school operates within its compound. The structure, though slowly decaying, continues to attract history lovers, photographers, and heritage travellers who appreciate its cultural importance. With proper restoration, Andul Rajbari could once again regain its former glory."

"The Durga puja of Andul Rajbari in Howrah is more than two hundred fifty years old. Although the condition of the main palace is quite dangerous, the Thakur dalan located next to the palace is in quite good condition. A small fair is also held in the Rajbari premises on the occasion of Durga puja."

The structure still reflects the grandeur of old Bengal, though some areas need maintenance. It’s a peaceful spot for history lovers and photographers. Visiting early morning or evening is best to enjoy the calm surroundings."
