"It is an Chettinad heritage house converted into a mansion. If you want to experience chettinad property, go for it.
The Pros are that you get to feel and experience the local tradition and heritage. You get modern amenities inside a heritage building. They have an in-house restaurant. Their complimentary breakfast is pretty good.
Cons are that the original Kanadukathan Chettinad Palace is just behind this property but they do not allow public visitation. Their restaurant menu is damn costlier and not at all Chettinad cuisine. This mansions stay is priced extremely high. Limited parking with hassle. You can hear noise from neibohring rooms."

Overall, it was totally worth the price and highly recommended for a unique and locally rooted stay!"

The Chettiar Community and Their Mansions
These mansions are characterized by their vast size, often featuring dozens of rooms, spacious courtyards, and intricate decorative elements. They were built using high-quality materials like Burmese teak, Italian marble, and Athangudi tiles, the latter being a unique local craft. The design prioritized ventilation and natural light, with wide corridors, high ceilings, and strategically placed windows. Many mansions also housed family temples and elaborate storage areas for dowries and valuables.
Sadly, many of these architectural wonders are now in a state of decline or have been dismantled, as the Chettiar community's economic focus shifted. However, a significant number have been preserved or converted into heritage hotels, museums, and private residences, offering visitors a chance to experience their grandeur. Efforts are ongoing to conserve this unique architectural heritage.
Experiencing Chettinad Cuisine
Key to Chettinad cooking is the use of local ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Dishes are often slow-cooked to allow the flavors to meld beautifully. While meat and seafood dishes are prominent, there are also many delicious vegetarian options. The cuisine reflects the region's history and trade routes, with influences from Sri Lankan and Southeast Asian flavors.
When visiting, be sure to try signature dishes like Chettinad Chicken Curry, Mutton Sukka, Prawn Masala, and various rice preparations. Many heritage hotels and local eateries offer an authentic taste of this renowned regional cuisine. Dining in a traditional setting, perhaps under the stars, adds to the overall experience.

The sheer variety of artifacts, including old doors, windows, furniture, and decorative items, makes for a fascinating browsing experience. It's a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of Chettinad history.
While the markets offer a unique shopping experience, it's important to note that some items might be reproductions or have been restored. However, many genuine antiques are available. The atmosphere is often laid-back, allowing you to take your time and discover hidden gems.
