"Kaylana Lake, a serene man‑made oasis just 8 km west of Jodhpur, was built in 1872 by Maharaja Pratap Singh to alleviate water scarcity . Covering about 0.84 km² and reaching depths of 35–50 ft, it sits nestled among rugged rock formations and babool trees, creating a striking contrast against the desert backdrop .
Visitors often praise the lake for its peaceful ambiance and natural beauty. In winter (October–March), it transforms into a paradise for bird watchers, welcoming migratory species like Siberian cranes, pelicans, herons, and flamingos . Early mornings and evenings offer the best light, turning the water into a reflective canvas at sunrise and sunset .
Recreational options are plentiful—boating is popular, with paddle, motor, and speed boats available (from around ₹120–₹250) . Nature walks, trekking to a nearby Shiv Mandir, cycling, and picnicking by the shore add to the charm .
Despite its appeal, amenities are sparse. Visitors note limited facilities—restrooms can be locked or inaccessible, and there's a shortage of food stalls . So pack essentials like water and snacks. Entry is free, and the lake is accessible daily, best enjoyed from 9 AM to 5 PM .
Overall, Kaylana Lake is a peaceful retreat—ideal for a 2–3‑hour stop. It’s especially lovely during winter and monsoon when migratory birds take centre stage. Just don’t expect luxury—come for the calm, wildlife sightings, and scenic views of Jodhpur’s desert landscape."

"This place is a little far from the city area and when I visited that time the lake had not enough water so you might be disappointed and also, this place does not have that much greenery and even the whole jodhpur city need some trees and gardens so many tourists can easily attract to visit. But yes this place is situated at a small height and you can also enjoy the sunset view from the small mountain area."

The History and Creation of Kaylana Lake
The construction involved creating a dam that transformed a barren landscape into a vital water source. Nestled amidst rugged rock formations and dotted with babool trees, the lake presents a unique and striking contrast against the arid desert backdrop of Rajasthan. This blend of natural ruggedness and human engineering is a key part of its visual appeal.
Today, Kaylana Lake stands as a testament to historical water management solutions and offers a serene escape. Its creation has not only provided water but also fostered a micro-ecosystem that attracts diverse flora and fauna, especially during migratory seasons.
Wildlife and Birdwatching at Kaylana Lake
Commonly sighted species include the elegant Siberian cranes, majestic pelicans, graceful herons, and the colorful flamingos. The presence of these birds adds a dynamic layer to the lake's natural beauty, offering a unique spectacle against the desert landscape. Early morning and late afternoon are often the best times for sightings, as birds are most active during these cooler parts of the day.
Beyond the migratory visitors, the lake also supports resident bird species and other small wildlife. The surrounding scrub and rocky terrain provide habitats for various desert-adapted creatures. It's a great spot for nature enthusiasts to observe local biodiversity.
Recreational Activities and Visitor Experience
For those who prefer to stay on land, nature walks and trekking are popular. A notable trek leads to the Siddhnath Mahadev Temple, situated on a hill overlooking the lake, offering panoramic views of Jodhpur. Cycling along the lake's periphery is another enjoyable way to explore the area.
Visitors often describe the ambiance as peaceful and serene, making it an ideal spot for picnics and relaxation. However, it's important to note that amenities are limited. While entry is free, visitors are advised to carry their own water and snacks, as food stalls are scarce and restroom facilities can be unreliable.
