Reviews Summary

Shingroba Temple is a revered roadside shrine on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, known for its scenic Khandala Ghat location, especially beautiful during the monsoon. Visitors appreciate the folklore behind the 'road god' and stop to pray for safe travels.

"This is located on a khandala ghat which is very scenic during monsoons. This offers stunning views of the valley, greenery and beautiful highway. There is a folk tale behind this temple. In 18th century, this road (Mumbai-pune) was jot available and that journey took almost 18 hours. Britishers were thinking of reducing the time and they started to search for a road through these mountains. But they were unable to get a road. Then, a coward names Shingroba passing by told that he knows the road through this tough terrain as he daily takes his sheep to this mountains. As per his suggestion, Britishers made this road. After that, they asked Shingroba to demand anything he required as a gift for this. He demanded nothing for himself but India's independence. He was shot dead on spot by that British officer. This temple is a memorial of this story."

The Legend of Shingroba

The Shingroba Temple is steeped in local folklore, a memorial to a man named Shingroba who, according to legend, helped the British find a route through the treacherous Khandala ghats in the 18th century. The story goes that he knew a path through the mountains where others failed, enabling the construction of the old Mumbai-Pune road. Reddit

As a reward for his invaluable assistance, Shingroba reportedly asked for India's independence, a request that led to his tragic demise. This temple stands as a tribute to his contribution and sacrifice, making it more than just a roadside shrine but a site of historical and cultural significance. InstagramReddit

Today, travelers passing through this route often stop at the temple to offer prayers for a safe journey, viewing Shingroba as a 'road god' who watches over them. This practice has been ongoing for generations, with many offering coconuts and coins. Reddit
