Madhyaranga Temple Shivanasamudra

"Madhyaranga Shri Ranganathaswamy Temple, located in Shivanasamudra, is a peaceful and historically significant temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha (a reclining form of Lord Vishnu). I specifically joined the KSRTC Gaganachukki package from Bangalore to visit this temple, as I had read long ago about the three sacred Ranga temples situated along the Kaveri River — Adi Ranga (Srirangapatna), Madhya Ranga (Shivanasamudra), and Antya Ranga (Srirangam) — and was eager to experience them in person.

This temple, known as Madhya Ranga, sits on a small island-like area formed by the flowing Kaveri River, and has a deeply spiritual and serene setting. It holds great significance in the Vaishnavite tradition, and though smaller than the temples in Srirangapatna and Srirangam, it offers a very calm and personal spiritual experience.

Currently, renovation work is ongoing at the temple, and the main deity has been temporarily moved outside to a small covered area. Despite this, the darshan experience was still special and peaceful.

The temple architecture reflects Hoysala and Vijayanagara influences, and the reclining idol of Lord Ranganatha is beautiful even in the temporary shrine.

Being located near Gaganachukki and Bharachukki waterfalls, this temple adds a perfect spiritual dimension to a nature-filled trip. Less crowded, quiet, and steeped in history — it’s a must-visit, especially if you're following the Ranga Kshetra journey along the Kaveri."

The Madhyaranga Shri Ranganathaswamy Temple, also known as Sri Jaganmohana Ranganatha Swamy Temple, is a revered Hindu temple located in Shivanasamudra, Karnataka. Situated on an island formed by the Kaveri River, this temple is one of the three prominent Ranganatha temples along the river, collectively known as the Pancharanga Kshetrams. The other two are Adi Ranga at Srirangapatna and Antya Ranga at Srirangam .

Believed to have been constructed during the Chola dynasty over 1,600 years ago, the temple showcases the Dravidian style of architecture . Over the centuries, it has undergone renovations and enhancements under various rulers, including the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara kings, Mysore Wodeyars, and Hyder Ali . The main deity, Lord Ranganatha, is depicted in a reclining posture on the serpent Adishesha and is affectionately referred to as “Mohana Ranga” or “Jaganmohana Ranga,” symbolizing the youthful form of the supreme being .

The temple’s intricate carvings and sculptures depict various deities and mythological scenes, reflecting the artistic prowess of ancient craftsmen . Its serene ambiance, complemented by the gentle sounds of the nearby Barachukki and Gaganachukki waterfalls, offers a tranquil setting for devotees and visitors alike.

Visitors have praised the temple for its historical significance and serene environment. One reviewer noted, “Very beautiful and one of the historical temples. Currently under renovation work is going on, must-visit place for Sri Ranganatha Swamy here” . However, some have pointed out challenges such as the temple often being closed due to the priest’s irregular attendance and limited maintenance efforts .

The temple is located approximately 85 km from Mysore and 115 km from Bangalore, making it accessible for day trips. Its proximity to the Shivanasamudra waterfalls adds to its appeal, allowing visitors to combine spiritual exploration with nature’s beauty. "

"The main temple is under renovation. A star less because the maintenance of temple is not upto mark. Temple premises, pooja counter, wash room area hygiene maintenance is lacking. I am very happy that Annadanam is there everyday. Food was good. Thank God it's still not yet commercialized unlike chamundi temple, sri kanteshwara temple etc wher revenue is a priority than sanity with God."
