My recent visit to Kovalam Fish Market was disappointing and far below expectations. While the market is known for offering fresh seafood, the overall experience was chaotic, unhygienic, and poorly managed.
First and foremost, the cleanliness of the market is a major concern. The floors were wet and slippery with fish waste scattered all over, and there was a constant strong stench due to the lack of proper drainage and cleaning. Flies and stray animals roamed freely, making it uncomfortable and even unhealthy for customers.
The vendors were aggressive and constantly shouting over each other, creating a stressful atmosphere. Haggling is expected, but many sellers inflated prices significantly for tourists and outsiders, making it hard to trust what you're being sold. There’s little transparency about the quality or freshness, and in some cases, we noticed stale fish being mixed with fresh stock.
Parking is another major issue — there's no organized space, and vehicles are left haphazardly on the roadside, leading to traffic jams and confusion.
Overall, while Kovalam Fish Market may offer a variety of seafood, the experience is unpleasant due to poor hygiene, crowd mismanagement, and lack of basic facilities. A serious upgrade is much needed."

"The fish here in the market are not fresh and may be a day or 2 old. Better get the fish from fisherman from the beach directly. If you go by 10:30 or 11AM you can get big fishes that are freshly caught.
Also beware of scams in fish market (not in beach) there. Fish seller named Radha tried to cheat me by distracting and asked me to pay by cash what ever is available but asked me to pay full in Gpay as well. I mistakenly paid full in Gpay on top of cash paid during bargaining and all. Once realized after 30mins I came back but she refused taking cash. After much argument and police threat she gave back my extra cash paid.
A bad experience but a lesson for me."
