Visiting the Bay Island Driftwood Museum in Kumarakom was one of the most memorable and enriching experiences of my trip. This museum is unlike any other — it is a celebration of nature’s own creativity, where ordinary pieces of driftwood collected from the sea have been transformed into extraordinary works of art.

From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by an atmosphere of warmth and curiosity. The museum houses an astonishing collection of driftwood sculptures — each piece shaped naturally by the forces of the sea and then carefully preserved and displayed. What’s most captivating is how the wood seems to tell stories on its own. Many pieces resemble animals, birds, mythical creatures, and human figures, as if nature itself was the sculptor.

The highlight of our visit was the personal guidance we received from Mrs. Raji Punnoose, the visionary behind this museum. Her passion and dedication to preserving these rare creations are truly inspiring. She has a remarkable talent for bringing each piece to life through her explanations — pointing out the subtle details, sharing the history of where the wood was found, and describing how it naturally formed into its unique shapes. Listening to her felt like being part of a fascinating storytelling session that deepened our appreciation for both nature and art.

The way the sculptures are displayed also deserves praise. Each exhibit is thoughtfully arranged so you can admire it from different angles, noticing new details each time. The lighting and curation highlight the natural textures and shapes of the wood, allowing you to see the true artistry of nature’s hand.

Beyond the exhibits, the hospitality and service at the museum were exceptional. The staff were welcoming, patient, and eager to answer questions. The environment was clean, well-maintained, and provided a peaceful space to explore at your own pace. The care taken in preserving the sculptures and presenting them so beautifully reflects the museum’s commitment to quality and education.
