Reviews Summary

Khanderi Fort offers a rewarding historical and scenic experience, with visitors praising its well-preserved fortifications, the lighthouse views, and the unique 'metallic' rock. However, concerns have been raised about the cleanliness of the fort due to littering and defacement by some visitors, and the lack of amenities like food stalls. Reddit

"Very good experience visiting this place. Fort has various points to take a look. Personally I liked the light house and radar station area. They've installed solar panels on the fort for renewable source for the electricity which is quite good initiative. The fort has new jetty but the small boats dock on the old walside of the fort. It's quite pleasant to visit on a high tide day . One must carry food and water with themselves, I didn't find there any food stalls. So plan accordingly. Boats leave from Thal.(Does not provide life jackets, safety depends upon the boats men) Local villagers will guide you to the fishermen who drives boats to the fort. It's better if you have your own vehicle to reach there. You can also reach there by public transport also from Alibag Bus stand or by mandwa jetty. Overall good place to explore. It has historical significance. You'll get to know better about it when you get there. Connectivity could've been better but it's manageable. I got good network signal coverage considering airtel sim card."

"Khanderi and Underi forts, often collectively referred to as Khanderi-Mandwa, are hidden maritime gems located off the coast of Alibaug, Maharashtra. Accessible via a short boat ride from Thal or Alibaug beach, these historic sea forts are rich in Maratha and colonial history and offer a unique blend of adventure and heritage.

Khanderi Fort, built by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, stands proudly amidst the Arabian Sea. It once served as a strategic naval base and holds immense historical significance. The fort houses an old lighthouse, ancient cannons, fortification walls, and temples that echo tales of Maratha naval prowess. From the top, one gets a stunning panoramic view of the sea and Mumbai's distant skyline.

Underi Fort, also nearby, was occupied by the Siddis and later fell into British hands. Though smaller, it’s equally captivating with its mysterious stone pathways and moss-covered walls that create an eerie, yet magical ambiance.

These islands are relatively untouched by commercialization, which makes them perfect for history lovers, photographers, and peace-seekers. However, visiting requires some planning, as access depends on tide conditions and local boat availability.

Overall, Khanderi-Mandwa is an offbeat but incredibly rewarding destination. It combines history, scenic beauty, and a dash of adventure. For anyone visiting Alibaug or Mumbai’s coastal area, a trip to these forts is like stepping back in time—an experience that leaves you both awed and inspired. A must-visit for fort and history enthusiasts!"

"An ancient and a beautiful fort. There is a lighthouse on the fort and the fort is under the control of Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.

I was saddened by looking at the number of liquor bottles lying here and there. The fort is very very filthy with litter all around. There are names written all over the walls at various places. Such a wonderfully built fort has been dirtied by us. Such a shame!"
