What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Ahilya Fort and Ghats for their royal charm, serene Narmada River views, and rich historical significance, highlighting Rani Ahilyabai Holkar's legacy. The architecture is stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere is deeply appreciated. However, some reviews mention concerns about cleanliness and the high cost of staying at the heritage hotel.
"My visit to Maheshwar was truly memorable. The serene Narmada River, the majestic Ahilya Fort, and the beautiful ghats reflected royal charm. Rani Ahilyabai Holkar’s legacy lives on through the grand temples and her contributions to the town. The peaceful atmosphere and historic beauty made it an unforgettable experience."

"Ahilya Devi Maheshwar Fort is a must-visit place in Maheshwar. The architecture is stunning – you will notice unique patterns and designs, including carvings of men wearing fetas (turbans) standing as dwarpals (gatekeepers). The vibe of the fort is truly wonderful. There is also a Shiva temple inside, but its main door was closed during my visit. On the other side, you can see temples of Ram, Sita, and Hanuman ji.
Climbing up the fort gives you a spectacular view – on one side the Narmada River, and on the other the grand fort itself. The atmosphere is peaceful and culturally rich. However, I do feel the management should focus more on cleanliness and proper maintenance, as this is a historic monument.
I also saw pre-wedding shoots happening here. Personally, it felt odd, since this place represents our cultural heritage and history. While it may be allowed by management, such activities should be reconsidered to preserve the sanctity of the site.
When you go down towards the ghats, you’ll find a beautiful river view, small temples, and devotees taking a holy bath in the Narmada. The entire experience is divine and memorable."

"Maheshwar fort at the bank of Maa Narmada is an epicenter of culture and spirituality. While this fort has its own charm due to its grand stature and architecture, for me the more fascinating is the stories of courage and valour of Devi Ahilliya bai. While being brave and powerful, her religious inclination and stories of reviving temples all across the India was something unique and inspiring.
This town gives very different energy ant vibes. One may need almost half day to fully expore the town.
