"I did Hampta pass in June 2023 and it was one of the most difficult trek i did. The trek i did was through Mountain Marks company. "The Hampta Pass Trek in Himachal Pradesh is an absolute must-do for anyone who loves trekking and nature and wants to start off their trekking journey.
From lush green valleys to stark, dramatic landscapes, this trek offers a bit of everything. The transition from the verdant Kullu Valley to the arid Spiti Valley is nothing short of magical.
The trek is moderately challenging, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers. The trail is well-marked, and the guides are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. The highlight was definitely crossing the Hampta Pass at 14,000 feet – the panoramic views of the Himalayas were breathtaking!
The campsites were well-organized, and the food provided was delicious and energizing. Waking up to the sound of the river and the sight of snow-capped peaks was surreal. The Chandratal Lake side trip was the cherry on top – a serene, blue oasis amidst the mountains.
The only thing to keep in mind is the weather, which can be unpredictable, so pack wisely. Overall, this trek was an incredible experience, and I can't recommend it enough. If you're looking for an adventure that combines beauty, challenge, and tranquility, the Hampta Pass Trek is it!"

"Hampta Pass Trek Experience – A Journey Through Changing Landscapes
Hampta Pass is undoubtedly one of the most scenic monsoon treks in India, and I recently had the privilege of completing it on 3rd July. Spanning 5 days and 4 nights, this trek offers a diverse range of landscapes that transform dramatically with each passing day.
The initial two days take you through the lush green meadows and pine forests of the Kullu and Manali valleys, filled with vibrant flora and flowing streams. As you progress, the scenery shifts completely—the remaining three days unveil the stark, rugged beauty of the Spiti Valley, with its dramatic, desert-like terrain that feels like an entirely different world.
One of the highlights of the trek for me was the stunning campsites. Nestled between valleys at high altitudes, each campsite offered breathtaking panoramic views. Notably, the Shea Goru campsite, situated at around 13,000 feet, stood out for its elevation and surreal surroundings.
The best time to undertake this trek is between May and June, when the trails are accessible, and the weather is favorable. I would also highly recommend extending the trek to include a visit to Chandratal Lake—it truly adds a cherry on top of an already unforgettable experience."

The cost varies significantly depending on whether you go with a trekking company or independently. Independent treks might be cheaper but require more planning for logistics and safety.

🎫 🥾 Onsite Experience
Hampta Pass is considered a moderately challenging trek. While it's often recommended for beginners, it involves significant altitude gain, steep ascents, and potential snow crossings, requiring good physical fitness and mental resilience.
Accommodation is primarily in tents at designated campsites. These campsites are usually set up in scenic locations, offering basic amenities. Some treks might include a night in a guesthouse or homestay at the beginning or end.
Mornings are generally the best time to start your trek. This allows you to cover a good distance before the sun gets too intense and also provides ample time to reach the campsite before dusk. Early starts also help in avoiding afternoon weather changes.
Daily trekking hours can vary from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the day's distance, terrain, and altitude. The trek is usually broken down into manageable segments, with breaks for meals and rest.
Trekking solo is possible but not generally recommended for beginners due to safety concerns and the need for acclimatization. If you choose to go solo, ensure you have proper gear, communication devices, and inform someone about your itinerary. Hiring a local guide is advisable.

It's good to pack energy bars, nuts, dried fruits, chocolates, and any personal favorite snacks. These will be helpful for quick energy boosts during your daily treks.
While some operators might provide bottled water, it's environmentally better to carry a reusable water bottle and a water filter or purification tablets. You can refill your bottle from streams, but ensure the water is purified.
📸 📸 Photography
Every turn offers a photo opportunity! Key spots include the lush Kullu Valley, the dramatic Spiti landscapes, the Hampta Pass summit, the serene Shea Goru campsite, and any glacial streams or snow patches you encounter.
A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is ideal. A wide-angle lens is great for landscapes, and a telephoto can be useful for distant peaks. Don't forget extra batteries and memory cards, as charging is limited.
While many trekkers bring their gear, exercise caution. Use a sturdy camera bag with good padding. Keep your camera protected from dust and moisture, especially during snow or rain.
The golden hours – early morning and late afternoon – offer the best light for landscape photography. Sunrise over the mountains and the soft light illuminating the valleys are magical.
Generally, there are no specific photography restrictions on the Hampta Pass trek itself. However, always be respectful of local customs and any sensitive areas you might pass through.

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider opting for a trek with a reputable agency that has experience with families. They can provide guidance on pacing and ensure safety. The dramatic landscape changes and the camping experience can be incredibly engaging for older kids, offering a unique educational and adventurous opportunity.
💰 Budget Travelers
Another budget-friendly approach is to organize the trek independently, but this requires significant planning for permits (if any), camping gear rental, food supplies, and hiring local porters or guides. This option is best suited for experienced trekkers who are comfortable with self-sufficiency and navigating remote areas.
💑 Couples Seeking Adventure
Opting for a guided trek can allow you both to focus on the experience without worrying about logistics. Sharing a tent and the daily journey can be a unique way to strengthen your connection. The optional detour to Chandratal Lake adds an extra layer of romantic tranquility to the adventure.

Key stages of the trek include the initial ascent through pine forests and meadows, often adorned with wildflowers, followed by the challenging climb to Hampta Pass itself, situated at an altitude of approximately 14,100 feet. After crossing the pass, the scenery transforms into a barren, rocky terrain characteristic of Spiti. The campsites, such as Shea Goru, are strategically located at high altitudes, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a surreal camping experience.

Navigating Hampta Pass: Gear, Fitness, and Safety
Physical fitness is paramount. Trekkers should engage in cardiovascular exercises and strength training in the weeks leading up to the trek. This will help in enduring the long trekking hours and steep ascents. Acclimatization is also key; ascending gradually and staying hydrated can significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
For safety, especially for solo trekkers or those new to trekking, opting for a reputable trekking agency is highly recommended. They provide experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the terrain, weather patterns, and emergency procedures. Carrying a basic first-aid kit and knowing how to use it is also vital. Informing someone about your trekking plan and expected return date is a standard safety practice.
The Allure of Chandratal Lake: A Hampta Pass Detour
Reaching Chandratal Lake typically involves an additional day of travel from one of the campsites or after completing the main Hampta Pass trek.
