You need to buy a permit to hike. Office opens at 7am. The queue was very small. It was midweek. I suspect it can be very busy during peak times."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider the watchtower option if the full trek seems too strenuous for younger children or if you can't secure trek tickets. It provides lovely views without the extensive hiking. Pack plenty of snacks and water, as facilities are limited. Visiting during drier months will make the experience more comfortable for the whole family.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save on accommodation and be close to the ticket counter, consider staying at Zostel. This hostel offers affordable lodging and is within walking distance of the trek starting point, potentially saving you taxi fares. Packing your own food and water will also cut down on expenses during your visit.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Aim for early morning or late afternoon for the best light. Wide-angle lenses are ideal for the expansive vistas, while a telephoto lens can capture details in the distant hills. Be prepared for changing weather conditions; a rain cover for your camera is highly recommended, especially during the monsoon.

The Trek Experience
The highlight for many is reaching the heart-shaped lake, known as Hridayasaras, a picturesque natural formation. While the summit itself is currently closed for trekking, the views from the accessible points are still spectacular, providing panoramic vistas of Wayanad's rolling hills and verdant valleys.
Preparation is key for this trek. Carry ample water and snacks, as facilities are limited. The Kerala Forest Department maintains the trail, ensuring it's relatively well-kept, but always be mindful of the terrain and weather conditions.
Navigating Monsoon Challenges
Travelers are strongly advised to wear waterproof trekking shoes with excellent grip. Carrying a raincoat or umbrella is non-negotiable. Some visitors have found a bamboo walking stick invaluable for stability on the slick paths, providing an extra point of contact and support.
While the roads leading to the base are generally decent, they can develop potholes during the monsoon. Two-wheeler riders should exercise extreme caution. Active landslides are uncommon but not impossible in severe weather, so staying informed about local conditions is wise.
Ticket System and Access
For those looking for a strategic advantage, staying at Zostel, located less than 1 km away, is a popular recommendation. This proximity significantly increases your chances of obtaining tickets. The current pricing structure is Rs. 4000 for a group of up to 5 people for the trek to the lake.
Alternatively, visitors can opt for a more budget-friendly experience by walking to the Chembra watchtower, which costs Rs. 50 per person. This offers a different perspective and is a good option if you don't secure trek tickets or prefer a shorter excursion.
