Reviews Summary

Banganga Tank is lauded for its historical significance, spiritual atmosphere, and unique legend, offering a glimpse into old Mumbai. Visitors appreciate the serene environment and photographic potential. However, many reviews point out concerns regarding cleanliness and maintenance, suggesting a need for better preservation of this heritage site.

"Banganga Tank

Just next to Walkeshwar Temple is the famous Banganga Tank, a large rectangular water tank surrounded by temples and dharamshalas.

As per legend, Lord Rama shot an arrow (baan) into the ground to quench his thirst, and a freshwater spring emerged here, despite being so close to the Arabian Sea.

Even today, the tank’s water is fresh, not salty."

"Review of Banganga Tank, Mumbai

Banganga Tank is an important part of the city’s heritage. The serene atmosphere, surrounded by old temples and traditional houses, makes it a fascinating place to visit.
However, despite its historical value, the site is not maintained as well as it should be. During my visit, I noticed that cleanliness was a major concern. Given that many tourists, including foreigners, visit Banganga to experience India’s heritage, it is crucial that the site is kept in pristine condition. Preserving such places reflects our cultural pride and responsibility. In my opinion the government should take initiative to maintain and restore Banganga Tank. Regular cleaning, better infrastructure, and awareness campaigns can help protect this historic site. With proper care, Banganga can continue to be a beautiful and peaceful retreat in the midst of Mumbai
If you are a history lover or someone seeking a peaceful spot in Mumbai, Banganga Tank is worth a visit. But I truly hope to see better maintenance in the future so that this heritage site can shine as it deserves."

The Legend and History of Banganga Tank

The Banganga Tank in Walkeshwar, Mumbai, is steeped in legend and history, dating back to 1127 CE. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama, on his journey to Ayodhya, felt thirsty and shot an arrow ('baan') into the ground. From this spot, a spring of pure, freshwater emerged, giving the tank its name: 'Baan Ganga'. This subterranean source is remarkable because it's located so close to the Arabian Sea, yet its water remains fresh, not saline. This unique characteristic has contributed to its profound religious significance for centuries. Reddit

The tank itself is a magnificent example of ancient Indian architecture, resembling a step well with its stone masonry lining. It has served not only as a source of water but also as a vital spiritual center for Hindus. It is particularly known as a site for performing 'asthi visarjan', the ritualistic immersion of ashes after a cremation, a practice that continues to this day. This makes Banganga Tank a place of deep reverence and solemnity for many. Reddit

Despite its historical and spiritual importance, Banganga Tank faces challenges with maintenance. Reviews often highlight concerns about cleanliness and the need for better preservation efforts. However, for history buffs, heritage lovers, and artists, the site retains its charm, offering a tangible connection to Mumbai's ancient past and a stark contrast to the modern city surrounding it. Reddit

Early mornings are particularly magical, with the soft light illuminating the ancient temples and the quiet waters. This is when you can best witness the daily rituals performed by locals, offering a glimpse into the enduring traditions of Hinduism. Reddit

The presence of numerous temples and dharamshalas (religious rest houses) surrounding the tank creates a unique spiritual enclave. Each structure tells a story, and the air is often filled with the faint sounds of chanting or temple bells. For those interested in Hindu customs, observing the 'asthi visarjan' rituals can be a profound, albeit somber, experience. It's a reminder of the cycle of life and the deep-rooted beliefs that shape the community. Reddit

Travelers often describe the vibe as being similar to Varanasi, another major Hindu pilgrimage site, highlighting the tank's sacred status. While the site's upkeep is a concern for some, the overall spiritual energy and the sense of stepping back in time are undeniable draws for visitors seeking a more authentic and contemplative experience in Mumbai.
