Reviews Summary

Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat offers a unique, albeit intense, glimpse into Mumbai's working life. Visitors are often struck by the sheer scale and efficiency of this open-air laundry, appreciating the hard labor of the dhobis. However, the strong smells and chaotic environment can be off-putting for some, making it a polarizing attraction.

"Honestly, I don’t understand why people visit Dhobi Ghat as a tourist attraction. I passed by the area during my time in Mumbai, and the experience was very unpleasant.

I didn’t go inside — I just walked past — but even from the outside, the place looked very dirty and chaotic. The smell in the area was extremely strong and unpleasant, which made it hard to stay nearby for more than a minute.

While I respect the hard work of the people who work there, I personally don’t see the appeal of visiting this place as a tourist. It felt more like an uncomfortable stop than something interesting or meaningful to explore.

If you’re sensitive to smells or looking for something cultural and enjoyable, I would not recommend adding Dhobi Ghat to your itinerary."

"The largest laundry site in the world, a fascinating tour. The washing stages are carried out in this place, the workers live near where they work, with laundry hanging to dry on site. We toured the paths leading to the various workshops with a local guide.

We toured with a guide named Maze."
