What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hira Mahal Nabha is recognized for its deep historical significance and the gracious hospitality of the royal family, offering a glimpse into Nabha's royal past. However, visitors consistently note its 'very poor condition' and the urgent need for restoration, with many hoping for government intervention to preserve this heritage site.
"The Royal family were very gracious to me and my 4 elderly companions- far beyond anything I could have hoped for.
I visited on the off chance of perhaps meeting in the future, a distant forefather served as a Minister in Maharaja Hira Singh’s Cabinet - Sardar Mehtab Singh Grewal.
Upon Mehtab Singh retiring, Maharaja Hira Singh asked if there was one last parting wish he might be able to grant, as his faithful Minister left the Nabha Royal Court to return to civilian life.
The favour requested by Mehtab Singh was for a pardon from the neighbouring Royal Court of Patiala for his paternal nephew (Sardar Raju Singh Grewal), who had been sentenced to death and had been imprisoned for years at that point, awaiting the implementation of the sentence. The sentence itself had been passed down to him following a tragic incident during a land dispute.
Maharaja Hira Singh having heard his Minister’s parting request went himself to ask for the pardon from the then reigning Maharaja of Patiala, which was granted immediately at the Royal Court of Nabha’s request.
This benevolent act by Maharaja Hira Singh meant my maternal great-grandfather, the grandfather of those that were with me that day, returned home and lived out his remaining years surrounded by family, including my 4 companions, for whom he was ‘Baba Ji’.
To conclude - the family’s warm reception and hospitality was far more than I could have dreamt, a great example of what Punjabiat was, and should be restored to."
