Reviews Summary

The Mount Abu Observatory MIRO is a significant astronomical research facility, though direct public access is restricted. Visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views from the nearby Guru Shikhar peak and appreciate the region's potential for clear night sky observation. The main drawback is the inability to enter the observatory itself.

"Strategically located observatory on Guru Shikhar. Entry is not available for public."

Mukesh Jha

"The idea of setting up an optical observatory and initiating the infrared and optical astronomy programme was put forth by PRL during the 1970s. After a suitable astronomical site survey of several locations, Gurushikhar, the highest peak of Aravali range in Mt Abu, Rajasthan (India), was found most appropriate due to its low water vapour, more than 220 observable nights with reasonably good seeing and the site's vicinity to PRL, Ahmedabad (240 kms). The first Telescope that came up at the sight is the 1.2m Telescope. The Mount Abu InfraRed Observatory (MIRO) is located near the town Mount Abu in the state of Rajasthan, India. The observatory is at an altitude of 1680 metres and is adjacent to Guru Shikhar, highest peak of the Aravalli Range."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Science Behind MIRO

The Mount Abu InfraRed Observatory (MIRO) is a crucial facility for the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), focusing on infrared and optical astronomy. Established in the 1970s, the selection of Gurushikhar as its site was based on rigorous astronomical site surveys. Key factors included its low water vapor content, which is essential for infrared observations, and the presence of over 220 observable nights per year with good atmospheric seeing conditions. The observatory's location at 1680 meters altitude minimizes atmospheric distortion, allowing for clearer views of celestial objects. Reddit

The first major instrument installed was a 1.2-meter telescope, designed to facilitate research into various astronomical phenomena. While direct public access to the operational observatory is restricted, its existence underscores India's commitment to advancing astronomical research. The proximity to PRL in Ahmedabad (240 km away) also facilitated logistical support and collaboration during its development and ongoing operations. Reddit

For those interested in the science of astronomy, understanding the conditions that make a site like Mount Abu ideal for observation is fascinating. The combination of altitude, clear skies, and minimal atmospheric interference provides a unique advantage for capturing detailed images and data from space. TikTok+1

Guru Shikhar, the highest peak of the Aravalli Range, provides a stunning vantage point. From here, visitors can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the rolling hills, lush valleys, and the expansive landscape. This makes it a prime spot for photography and simply soaking in the serene environment. Reddit

The altitude of Mount Abu contributes to its pleasant climate and clear skies, making it an attractive destination for those seeking respite from the heat and a chance to connect with nature. The journey to Mount Abu itself is often described as scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the unique topography of Rajasthan. TikTok

Even though direct access to MIRO is limited, the overall experience of visiting the Mount Abu region is enhanced by its natural splendor. The clear night sky, a direct benefit of its location, also offers amateur astronomers and casual observers a chance to appreciate the cosmos from a beautiful natural setting. TikTok+1
