What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Shillong Peak for its breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills, calling it a photographer's paradise. The unique access through an Air Force base and the serene pine-covered slopes add to its charm. However, the experience can be significantly impacted by weather, with mist often obscuring the views, and the mandatory taxi service adds an extra cost and step to the visit.
"Visited on a misty and rainy afternoon so missed out on the Shillong view but the experience was nice with some great pictures around and the wooded area as well . This is situated inside an Air Force cantonment area which means restricted access for vehicles. Only the regular taxis in that area are allowed to enter so you would need to switch cabs and pay 200 INr for a return trip ( 5 min drive ). The drive inside is nice and you get to see the cantonment area and school and all the facilities for the residents. No pictures till this view point , photo id are mandatory ."

"Shillong Peak offers the most breathtaking panoramic view of the entire town—an absolute paradise for photography lovers. The crisp mountain breeze and serene ambience can enchant anyone, making it more than just a viewpoint—it’s an experience.
Reaching here is unique: the peak lies inside an Air Force base, so private or public vehicles aren’t allowed. From the base gate, the ticket counter is about 10–15 minutes away, where you’ll get both tickets and a permitted vehicle to take you through the base. Carry a valid ID for verification at the main gate.
The area is immaculately maintained by the military, with a few souvenir shops (prices slightly high).
For its scenic charm and peaceful vibes, Shillong Peak is a must-visit gem of Meghalaya."

For the best photographic results, timing is crucial. Early mornings are ideal for capturing the city waking up under a clear sky, often bathed in soft, golden light. Late afternoons, especially during the golden hour, offer a different kind of magic with warm hues painting the landscape. However, be mindful of the weather; mist and fog are common and can obscure the views, transforming the experience into something more atmospheric but less about the panoramic sweep.
Beyond the grand vistas, the surrounding pine forests offer opportunities for intimate nature shots. The crisp mountain air and serene ambiance contribute to the overall photographic appeal. Understanding Shillong Peak's Weather and Best Visiting Times
To maximize your chances of clear views, aim for visits during the early morning hours or late afternoons on clear days. These times often offer the best visibility, allowing you to appreciate the city's expanse and the surrounding natural beauty. The crisp mountain air during these periods adds to the serene ambiance, making the visit more enjoyable.
While the peak is beautiful in any weather, a clear day truly unlocks its potential. The drive up through the pine-covered slopes is scenic regardless, but the payoff at the summit is greatest when the skies are clear. Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or weekdays to potentially avoid larger crowds and enjoy a more tranquil experience.
