Its strategic significance was cemented, however, after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it from the Adilshahi in 1670. It served as a crucial Maratha naval stronghold for coastal defense and monitoring pirates.
Structurally, the fort is unique for its distinctive horseshoe or semi-circular shape, spanning across a headland and flanked by the Arabian Sea on three sides. The massive complex is longitudinally divided into two main parts: the upper citadel (Balekilla) and the surrounding, lower fortifications (Parkot).
The strong architectural defense utilizes durable laterite stone for its massive outer walls and multiple key bastions, like the formidable Rede Buruj.
