Neermahal, translating literally to "Water Palace," is an architectural marvel and the single largest water palace in India, surpassing even the famous Jal Mahal of Rajasthan in size. Located approximately 53 kilometers from Agartala in the middle of the serene Rudrasagar Lake (a designated Ramsar site), it stands as a testament to the vision and aesthetic taste of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur.
History and Architectural Grandeur
Commissioned by the Maharaja and constructed by the British firm Martin & Burns between 1930 and 1938, Neermahal beautifully marries two distinct architectural traditions: Mughal and Hindu. The extensive use of marble and sandstone creates a striking visual against the backdrop of the lake.
The Hindu influence is evident in the ornate domes, the detailed pavilions, and the temple-like structures, while the Mughal style is reflected in the arched windows, latticework (jalis), and fort-like minarets. The palace is an architectural symphony of 24 rooms, balconies, and bridges. Its unique feature is the striking red-and-white color scheme, which creates a mesmerizing, mirror-like reflection on the still lake waters, particularly during sunset and at night.
The Visitor Experience
Access to Neermahal is exclusively by boat from the Rudrasagar Lake bank, adding to its romantic and secluded charm.
The palace is functionally divided into two main sections:
Andar Mahal (The Western Side): This section was the exclusive residential area for the royal family, featuring more private and intimate quarters.
Rang Mahal (The Eastern Side): This area served as an open-air theatre and venue for cultural events, dances, and dramas, showcasing the royal family's patronage of arts and culture.
A must-do for any visitor is to stay for the captivating Light and Sound Show held in the evening, which vividly narrates the palace's history and the legends of the Tripura Kingdom, with the palace itself serving as the illuminated backdrop. Additionally, the Rudrasagar Lake hosts the annual Neermahal Water Festival, featuring one of the largest boat races in the region.

"Visiting Neermahal in Tripura was a beautiful and memorable experience. The palace’s stunning architecture, set right in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, makes the whole place look magical. The boat ride to the palace adds to the charm and gives a unique view of the surroundings. The structure is well maintained, and exploring the halls and terraces feels like stepping back in time. "It's a hidden gem. Surprised to see this lovely place not getting enough eyeballs. It's at par with Jal Mahal from Jaipur and I would rather say it's much better.
You need to take a boat ride to enter this place. The views from this place is picturesque. It was built by Maharaja Bir Bikram. They should promote this much more. The only drawback is you need to take another ticket just to enter the palace after reaching it via boat.

The puchka or the panipuri you get in the premises is also one of the best you get in all of agartala.

It's around 1'30 min journey from Agartala, so plan accordingly."
