The story goes that as a young boy, Vaz would often sneak out of his home in the middle of the night to attend Mass at the nearby church. However, the church doors were always locked, and Vaz would have to wait until morning to attend services. One night, as Vaz was praying outside the church door, he heard a voice from within, saying, "Open the door, my child." Vaz obeyed, and to his surprise, the door swung open on its own, revealing an empty church.
Vaz spent the night in prayer, and when morning came, he left the church without being noticed. The next day, he told his parents about what had happened, and they were so impressed by his devotion that they allowed him to become a priest.
