What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sonepur Mela is a captivating blend of tradition and festivity, offering a unique cultural experience with vibrant sights, sounds, and tastes. While the cattle fair aspect has diminished, it now thrives as a major amusement and cultural event. Visitors praise the organization and atmosphere, but advise preparing for large crowds and long walks.
"Sonepur Mela is a captivating experience that beautifully blends tradition and modernity. Known as one of Asia’s largest cattle fairs, its charm lies in the vibrant atmosphere, the array of stalls, and the thrill of amusement rides. However, it’s worth noting that the number of cattle has significantly declined over the years, and the fair now leans more towards being an amusement and cultural event rather than a traditional cattle market.
One aspect that deserves applause is the commendable crowd management. Despite the overwhelming number of visitors, the organizers have ensured smooth navigation within the fairgrounds. However, visitors should prepare for long walks and dense crowds, especially during peak hours.
A word of advice: comfort is key. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and plan your restroom needs ahead of time. Sanitary facilities are scarce and often overcrowded, so it’s best to arrive prepared.
That said, the beauty of Sonepur Mela remains unmatched. The colorful decorations, local cuisine, and cultural performances make it a must-visit for anyone seeking to witness Bihar’s rich heritage. Just come with a sense of adventure and an open mind!"

"This is one of the biggest fair in India hosted during the month of nov/Dec. We visited there on 2024 and this is the biggest fair I have atte des so far.
This fair is spanned across the village and it's very easy to get lost due to the wide area along with massive crowd. We could not locate our parking area and had to struggle to find it.
There will be lakhs of people attending this fair from surrounding areas and you can find all daily needs on this fair for affordable price. Although hygiene is on the lesser side for the food items but people around the area are used to it"
