What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the immersive wildlife experience in Mudumalai National Park, with many enjoying the government safaris and the chance to see elephants at the Theppakadu camp. The scenic drives and roadside animal sightings are also a major draw. However, some find the ticket counter management chaotic and suggest improvements in safari vehicle maintenance and guide training.
"Always take government safari only and book it either online or through the national park check post counter.. Deer monkey, langoor, peacocks and bisons will be spoted on the road to ooty starting from bandipur itself and you need not to book any kinda safari for that and you can enjoy the view in your own vehicle or the hired vehicle.
There are many private safari brokers who loot people, taking you to random village saying that animal will be spoted on those village roads. Specially if you have booked a local taxi, the driver will pursuade you to take private safari. So avoid these brokers and private safari persons. I am putting pic of private safari vehicle for reference you have to avoid along with the pics and videos of the animals on road to madumalai forest reserve."

"Nice forest safari. I really like that. Choose a jeep safari, it is exploring. That is an off-road safari The best time for wishing is evening time. That time you want to see more animals. I see a tiger, bull, deer, elephant, peacock, eagle, malav, forest pig, etc. the charge is applicable for per head 500."

"This is actually near to the reception centre of the Mudumalai reserve forest at Theppakadu where the ticket counters for the safari / elephant camp are. The safari van and jeeps start from this place.
The centre offers van safari at ₹340 per person and Jeep safari at ₹4200 per trip (for 6 people). Camera charges, parking charges are separate.
The ticket counters and regulating the safari can be better managed. Could see chaos at the reception/counter. No separate counter for elephant camp ticket. No proper signage on what to do, where to go once you get the ticket. Wait times are based on luck.
There’s a small canteen at the entrance selling food items, no proper restaurant. Public restrooms are at 200 meters away on the main road. There’s a souvenir shop too.
The vans and jeeps can be better maintained for a comfortable ride. Drivers can be educated to act as guides and make it more educational for the public.
Good thing with Govt Safari is, the drive is through core forest area, though it doesn’t guarantee sighting of animals.
There’s a lot of things can be done to improve the safari experience of the people 🙏"

Navigating Masinagudi Safaris
It's important to note that the government safari routes are often fixed, focusing on areas where common sightings like deer, elephants, and peacocks are frequent. While this doesn't guarantee a tiger sighting, it provides a comprehensive look at the park's general biodiversity. Be prepared for potential chaos at the ticket counters, as management and signage could be improved. Booking online in advance can sometimes alleviate wait times.
Avoid private safari brokers who may promise guaranteed sightings in specific areas. These operators can sometimes lead visitors on less productive routes or charge exorbitant fees. Always verify the authenticity of the safari provider and stick to official channels for a safe and rewarding wildlife adventure.
Wildlife Encounters Beyond the Safari
These roadside sightings are a significant part of the Masinagudi charm, allowing visitors to appreciate the local fauna even when not on a formal safari. It's a reminder of the biodiversity hotspot that Masinagudi and the surrounding Mudumalai region represent. Travelers often share their excitement about these unexpected encounters, highlighting the natural integration of wildlife into the landscape.
While these sightings are common, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance and avoid feeding the animals. The goal is to observe them in their natural habitat respectfully. The presence of these animals on the roads adds to the overall immersive experience of being in a forest environment.
The Theppakadu Elephant Camp
Beyond the feeding sessions, the camp provides an educational experience about the role of elephants in the forest ecosystem and the conservation efforts in place. It's a popular spot for families, with children often expressing great joy and wonder during these interactions. The camp is located near the safari departure point, making it convenient to visit before or after your wildlife drive.
While the camp offers a unique experience, it's important to remember that these are wild animals. Visitors are advised to follow the instructions of the mahouts and staff to ensure both their safety and the comfort of the elephants. The Theppakadu Elephant Camp is a testament to the rich natural heritage of Masinagudi and a must-visit for animal lovers.
