"The Rockfort Temple, or Ucchi Pillaiyar Kovil, is the most famous landmark of Tiruchirappalli. The present temple complex is called a "rockfort" because this huge natural rock outcrop was extensively used for military fortifications, first by the Vijayanagara Empire and later by the British Empire during the Carnatic Wars. Later, this strategically important rock was further carved to make huge hallways and developed into a temple complex by various dynasties, This 275 m high rock is in the heart of the city. The peak nestles the Siva temple which is reached by climbing a flight of 437 steps, 8-12 inches steps cut unevenly into the rock. Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple is halfway up with a 100 pillared hall, and a Vimana. There are Tamil inscriptions on the rocks and temple walls that dated back to the 3rd century B.C. Reaching the summit I got a spectacular view of the city. One can easily spot the city's important landmarks, like the gopurams of Sriranga Swamy temple, Cauvery River, Coleroon River, bridges, Thiruvanaikal Kovil or Jambukeshwar temple. This climb is rewarding in many ways, and thereby, makes people happy with different interests."

After Ravana’s brother Vibheeshana helped Lord Rama in the war, Rama gifted him the Sri Ranganatha idol to take to Lanka.
On his way, Vibheeshana stopped near Trichy to rest.
Lord Ganesha, disguised as a small boy, placed the idol on the ground and disappeared — making it impossible for Vibheeshana to lift it again.
That spot became Srirangam, where the Ranganathaswamy Temple now stands.
When Vibheeshana realized he was tricked, he chased Ganesha, who ran up the rock and stayed there as Uchi Pillaiyar.
