"Actually the clock tower was erected by the British in 1870s, even before the world war has started. The clock tower was erected after the destruction of old Trichy fort and after establishing fort market (now known as Gandhi market). The British merely pasted the inscription describing the details of the men who took part in the world war on the clock tower since it was a prominent place. Also, the inscription does not say anything about the construction of the clock tower. It simply gives the number of men who participated in the world war. British records from 1878 mentions about the clock tower, but the world war is from 1914 to 1918. So the British didn't construct the clock tower for Indians, they simply pasted the information on the pre existing clock tower. That's it."
