According to Sthala Purana and Skanda Purana, once Lord Brahma became arrogant about his creative powers. To humble him, Lord Vishnu incarnated here as Uthamar and showed His universal form. Humbled, Brahma performed penance at this spot and built a shrine for Vishnu. In response, Vishnu granted darshan to both Brahma and Shiva here. Hence, this temple is also called Bhikshatanar Koil, referring to the form of Lord Shiva as the mendicant (Bhikshatana) who sought alms here.
