What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari to be an affordable wildlife experience, with highlights including close encounters with lions, tigers, and a black panther. However, some feel the 'safari' aspect is more akin to a zoo due to caged buses and limited animal numbers, suggesting room for improvement in management and habitats.
"Visited Shimoga Zoo and Safari recently, and honestly, it felt more like just a zoo than an actual safari. The "safari" experience was underwhelming — the animals, including the tigers, were in enclosures just like in the zoo, so it didn’t feel like a true safari at all.
There was only one lion, and overall, the zoo section wasn’t very impressive either. There's definitely a lot of room for improvement in terms of animal habitats, maintenance, and visitor experience.
That said, the highlight was getting to see some big cats up close — lions, tigers, leopards, and even a black panther, which was exciting. But beyond that, it didn’t quite meet expectations."

"🌿 Shimoga Tiger-Lion Safari
Okay fam, let’s talk about the Shimoga Tiger-Lion Safari (Tyavarekoppa Safari) – honestly, it was a vibe. If you’re someone who loves nature but also wants that lil’ adrenaline rush of seeing wild animals up close, this spot is low-key perfect.
🐅 Safari Experience
The main attraction? Definitely the tigers and lions. The safari bus (yes, it’s caged, so chill 😂) takes you through the park, and the moment a tiger or lion casually strolls near the bus – bruhhh, chills. It feels surreal to see them in a semi-natural habitat instead of behind tiny zoo bars.
There’s also leopards, sloth bears, deer, and a bunch of birds. The bird section is actually super calming – like nature therapy after the big-cat drama.
⏰ Best Time to Visit
Pull up in the morning (10 AM – 12 PM or 3PM to 5PM) if you actually wanna see animals moving around instead of them napping in the shade like lazy roommates.
November to February = peak season. Cooler weather, better pics, and more active animals.
Summer afternoons? Hard pass. Both you and the animals will just be melting.
🛠️ Facilities & Chill Points
Tickets are mad affordable. Entry fee is like a couple of snacks’ worth, and the safari ride doesn’t break your wallet either. Perfect for college students or squad hangouts.
There’s a food corner for tea, snacks, and basics – don’t expect fancy café vibes, but it gets the job done.
Parking is easy, so no stressing about where to leave your car/bike.
If you’re with fam, kids are gonna love it – they even have a small play area.
Surrounded by greenery, so your lungs get a break from city pollution.
📸 Content Creator POV
If you’re into photography or just wanna flex on the ‘Gram, this place is solid. The animals look majestic, the greenery gives forest-core aesthetics, and if you catch golden hour, your reels will be 🔥. Just remember: charge your phone/camera fully, because wild animals don’t wait for you to find your charger.
💡 Pro Tips for the Safari
Hit it early morning = more animal action.
Rock comfy outfits & sneakers – you’ll walk around a bit.
Carry water, because hydration >>> everything.
If you’re going in summer, sunscreen is your bestie.
🎯 Final Take
The Shimoga Tiger-Lion Safari is not like some wild African savannah, but for Karnataka, it’s a solid 9/10 experience. Affordable, chill, and packed with wild energy. Whether you’re with friends, family, or even solo, it’s a refreshing break from city life.
If you’re in or near Shimoga, don’t even think twice – just go. You’ll leave with cool memories, dope pics, and maybe a new favorite spot to recommend."
SYED
"A very poorly managed Zoo and Safari near Shimoga. Only One lion and two tigers were there in the Safari Enclave, all of them in cages and we need to travel in fully secured buses to watch caged predators.... What is the logic behind this? Why it is called a Safari? Rs. 250 is the ticket cost per person for Zoo and Safari, totally worthless for the Safari Part. Moreover, despite having so many buses, the drivers used to wait till all the 20 seats got occupied and we made to wait for nearly 20 minutes inside the bus for other people to come.... Disgusting indeed.....!"

The Safari Experience: Expectations vs. Reality
Despite this, the experience is still considered a 'vibe' by many, offering a chance to see these majestic animals in a setting that feels more natural than standard zoo bars. The park also houses other animals like sloth bears, deer, and various bird species, contributing to a diverse wildlife viewing opportunity. The presence of a black panther is often cited as a unique highlight.
For those seeking an immersive, wild African savannah experience, Tyavarekoppa might fall short. However, for a budget-friendly and accessible way to see impressive wildlife up close in Karnataka, it remains a popular choice. Managing expectations about the 'safari' aspect is key to enjoying the visit.
Best Times to Visit for Optimal Sightings
November to February is considered the peak season, offering pleasant weather that is conducive to both animal activity and visitor comfort. The cooler temperatures during these months make it ideal for exploring the park and capturing better photographs. Conversely, summer afternoons should be avoided as the intense heat can cause animals to become lethargic and seek shade, significantly reducing sightings and making the visit uncomfortable for everyone involved.
Planning your visit around these optimal times will significantly enhance your chances of a rewarding wildlife encounter. Remember that animals are wild, and sightings are never guaranteed, but strategic timing greatly improves the probability.
Photography and Content Creation Tips
To maximize your photographic success, it's highly recommended to charge your camera or phone fully before arriving, as you won't want to miss a moment due to a dead battery. Using a telephoto lens is ideal for capturing animals from a distance, while a wider aperture can help create beautiful portraits with a blurred background. Fast shutter speeds are essential for freezing the motion of active animals.
Consider visiting during the golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) for the most flattering light, which can make your reels and photos truly stand out. While photography is generally permitted, always be respectful of the animals and avoid using flash directly at them, as it can cause distress. Following these tips will help you capture memorable images and create engaging content from your visit.
