"Jagat is a small village near Lake Jaisamand in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Ambika mata temple in Jagat is a centuries old temple which hardly sees any visitors. It quiet and its beautiful. The carvings and the sculptures here are almost 1000 years old and they are really intricate work of art.

we were in awe when we visited this place. It came as a surprise to us. We only had plans to visit the lake but somehow we got to know about this temple and made a quick detour. Jagat is about 45min to an hr drive from Lake Jaisamand. Route takes you through some winding roads along the villages of Rajasthan.

You should visit this place if you are around that area. You wont regret it.

Highly recommended."

Architectural Marvels: The M_aru-Gurjara Style

Ambika Mata Temple in Jagat is a prime example of the M_aru-Gurjara architecture, a style that flourished in Rajasthan and Gujarat from the 11th to 13th centuries. This style is characterized by its pentagonal plan, pagoda-like gabled roofs, and intricate sculptural detailing. The temple's massive rampart wall, 17 turrets, and the rich motifs on its tower, echoing surrounding mountain peaks, are hallmarks of this period's grand temple construction. The architectural theme often evokes a 'mountain palace,' a celestial abode for the gods, mirroring the temple's earthly residence. Reddit

The temple's exterior walls are adorned with exquisite details, featuring larger sculptures of gods and goddesses. Above these, you'll find depictions of heavenly musicians, dancers, and singers, alongside countless beautiful women. The richness and arrangement of the carving, often incorporating curling vegetal motifs, create a sense of dynamic movement and divine celebration. This level of detail and artistic execution is what draws comparisons to the famed Khajuraho temples. InstagramReddit

Built in 961 AD under the reign of Rawal Allata of Mewar, the temple also possesses several inscriptions. The earliest one, dated 961 AD, indicates repair work, suggesting the original shrine was even older. Today, the temple is preserved by the State Department of Archaeology and Museum, Rajasthan, ensuring its historical and artistic integrity for future generations. InstagramReddit

The Goddess Ambika and Her Significance

The presiding deity of the Ambika Mata Temple is Goddess Ambika, a powerful form of Goddess Durga, the divine mother and warrior goddess in Hinduism. Ambika is worshipped as Shakti, the primeval source of energy and cosmic power. Her association with Durga is evident through her lion mount, a symbol of strength and ferocity. InstagramReddit

Interestingly, Ambika also has connections to Jainism. She is sometimes depicted as a divine guide, as seen in a vision advising Vimala about building his Adinath temple at Mount Abu. This dual association highlights the syncretic nature of religious practices in ancient India. The temple's focus on female divinity underscores the importance of Shakti worship in the region. Reddit

The intricate sculptures within the temple not only depict Ambika and other Hindu deities but also celestial beings and divine attendants. These artistic representations serve as visual narratives of Hindu mythology and spiritual beliefs, offering visitors a glimpse into the religious and cultural landscape of the 10th century. InstagramReddit

A Photographer's Paradise: Capturing Ancient Artistry

For photography enthusiasts, Ambika Mata Temple is a dream destination. The exquisite stone carvings that adorn the temple's exterior provide endless opportunities for stunning shots. From detailed depictions of gods and goddesses to the lively scenes of celestial musicians and dancers, every angle offers a new perspective. Instagram+1

To truly capture the essence of this architectural marvel, consider using a wide-angle lens to encompass the temple's grandeur and a macro lens to zoom in on the intricate details of the sculptures. The play of light and shadow throughout the day can dramatically enhance the texture and depth of the carvings. Early mornings and late afternoons often provide the most dramatic lighting conditions. :camerawithflash: Instagram

While photography is generally welcomed, always remember to be respectful of the sacred site. Avoid intrusive photography, especially if there are any ongoing religious activities. The goal is to capture the beauty and history of the temple while maintaining its sanctity. Instagram
