"Alamgir Mosque, also known as Aurangzeb’s Mosque, is a 17th-century mosque on the Panchganga Ghat in Varanasi. Alamgir was the honorific title given to Aurangzeb after he became the emperor of India, which explains the name of the mosque. The mosque can be visited any day of the year. The interior of the mosque is relatively plain, featuring simple geometric and floral designs painted on the ceiling. The caretaker is a helpful person, ready to open the mosque for visitors and show them around."

"It's an ancient mosque built by Aurangzeb, after he captured Varanasi. The terrace comes with an excellent view of the ghats of Varanasi. The entry is free, but the caretakers will ask for a small donation from the guest before entering which goes straight into the donation box. The caretakers were very friendly & humble people who eagerly answered my queries and gave me a brief historic explanation about this heritage site upon asking. Do visit this place if you like history."

Pranav Poojary

"Located near the Panchaganga Ghat. This 350+ year old mosque is rustic and beautiful. The caretaker was very friendly. I’m glad that ladies are allowed to pray inside. However, the front doors were locked when we got there and fortunately a couple of locals helped us to get the gatekeeper’s attention to get inside."

Historical Context and Controversy

Alamgir Mosque, also known as Aurangzeb's Mosque, holds a significant and often controversial place in Varanasi's history. Built in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, it was named after his honorific title, 'Alamgir'. The mosque's construction is historically linked to the demolition of local temples, including the Bindu Madhava Temple and potentially the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, with the mosque being built on their ruins. This aspect of its history is a point of contention and historical debate. Instagram+2

This historical context is crucial for understanding the mosque's presence in Varanasi. While it stands as a testament to Mughal architecture and a place of worship, its origins are tied to a period of religious and political upheaval. Visitors interested in history will find the site thought-provoking, offering a glimpse into the complex past of the region. Reddit

Despite the historical controversies, the mosque is an active place of worship and a significant landmark on the Panchganga Ghat. The caretakers are often willing to share historical details, providing a more personal perspective on the site's past and present. Reddit

Experiencing Panchganga Ghat

Alamgir Mosque is perched above Panchganga Ghat, one of Varanasi's most important and ancient ghats. The name 'Panchganga' signifies the confluence of five sacred rivers, though in reality, it refers to the meeting of the Ganges with four other mythical streams. The ghat itself is characterized by its broad, imposing steps that descend directly to the Ganges River, making it a focal point for pilgrims and locals alike. InstagramReddit

From the mosque's terrace, visitors get a commanding view of Panchganga Ghat in action. You can observe the daily rituals, the boats navigating the river, and the vibrant life that unfolds along the Ganges. The steps themselves offer a unique perspective, allowing visitors to descend and experience the ghat's atmosphere up close. It's a place where spirituality, daily life, and historical grandeur converge. InstagramReddit

Visiting Panchganga Ghat, especially in conjunction with Alamgir Mosque, provides a holistic experience of Varanasi's spiritual and cultural landscape. The proximity to the river and the historical significance of both the ghat and the mosque make it a compelling stop for anyone exploring the city. TikTok
